More than a year after the events of The Long Goodbye, hard-boiled private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by an unknown client to tail Eleanor King, a beautiful red-head. Tracking her to the resort town of Esmeralda, Marlowe must unravel the truth about Eleanor and his mysterious client before it is too late. Playback was Raymond Chandler’s final novel and was published one year before his death. Since he first appeared in Chandler’s The Big Sleep in 1939, Philip Marlowe has come to define our idea of the private investigator. Many of Chandler’s short stories and novels featuring the Marlowe character were adapted for film and radio (including 1946 film The Big Sleep, starring Humphrey Bogart), and in 1983, the Marlowe character and many of Chandler’s short stories were used as the inspiration for the television series Philip Marlowe, Private Eye. The Philip Marlowe character’s popularity was such that Chandler even re-released many of his early short stories, changing the names of the various protagonists to Philip Marlowe. Suddenly, popular music resembles an alien landscape. The great common ground of 45s, LPs, and even compact discs is rapidly falling by the wayside to be replaced by binary bits of sound. In the 21st century, radical advances in music technology threaten to overshadow the music itself. Indeed, today the generations divide over how they listen to the music, not what kinds of music they enjoy.Playback is the first book to place the staggering history of sound reproduction within its larger social and cultural context. Concisely told via a narrative arc that begins with Edison's cylinder and ends with digital music, this is a history that we have all directly experienced in one way or another. From the Victrola to the 78 to the 45 to the 33 1/3 to the 8track to the cassette to the compact disc to MP3 and beyond (not to mention everyone from Thomas Edison to Enrico Caruso to Dick Clark to Grandmaster Flash to Napster CEO Shawn Fanning), the story of Playback is also the story of music, and the music business, in the 20th century.

Playback is the technique of rebroadcasting natural or synthetic signals to animals and observing their response. The ability to present a putative signal in isolation, without the potential confounding effects of other activities of the signaller, is the main reason for the depth and range of our knowledge of communication systems. To date, playback of sound signals has predominated, but playback of electric signals and even video playback of visual signals suggests that playback will become just as prevalent in studies of communication in other sensory modalities. This book is one of the outcomes of a workshop on playback held at Thombridge Hall in the Peak District National Park, England during August 1991. There were two reasons for organising the workshop. First, the considerable and lively debate in the literature about the design and analysis of playback experiments -the pseudoreplication debate -was in danger of generating more heat than light. A workshop forum seemed the obvious place to clarify and, if possible, resolve the debate. Second, with the number of new playback and analysis techniques increasing rapidly, it seemed an opportune moment to discuss these techniques and to review some rapidly developing areas of interest in sound communication.
