"Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, published in 1811. It was published anonymously; By A Lady appears on the title page where the author's name might have been. It tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor (age 19) and Marianne (age 16 1/2) as they come of age. They have an older, stingy half-brother, John, and a younger sister, Margaret (13). The novel follows the three Dashwood sisters as they move with their widowed mother from the estate on which they grew up, Norland Park, to their new home, Barton Cottage. The four women must move to a meagre cottage on the property of a distant relative, where they experience love, romance, and heartbreak. The novel is likely set in southwest England, London and Sussex between 1792 and 1797." From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love - and its threatened loss - the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love. This edition also includes explanatory notes and textual variants between first and second edition. Good, kind, practical Elinor - empathetic, compassionate to a fault, and as capable of deep feeling as her demonstrative mother and sister Marianne. She was the ideal prism through which to experience this story of the love and devotion between sisters, through romantic trials and disappointments. I loved this book to pieces.

It is 1912 when a gentleman arrives at the gateway to the imperial hunting lodge known as Spala in Polish Russia. But Charles Sydney Gibbes is not just any gentleman-he is the Romanov family's English tutor. Nicholas II, the most powerful and wealthy monarch of modern times, rules a nation spread across eleven time zones. Gibbes, who serves as English tutor to the Romanov children, has already gained the family's affection. But as Gibbes dutifully teaches, a strange holy man begins orchestrating a chain of events that eventually lead to the loss of a war and the family's wealth, their murders eight years later, and the abolishment of the monarchy. As Gibbes discovers the price of his loyalty, he also realizes that even when the book of history closes, the book of life never ends. The Night is Far Gone shares the historical tale of an imperial Russian family, its patriarch, and their loyal English tutor as they all attempt to find their way in a chaotic world.
