By all accounts, the case of Poland and its segue to market economy and democracy is a success story: 30 years of uninterrupted growth and development, infrastructure expansion, and modernization of the economy and society. Epochal changes have unfolded in a timespan of merely three decades. Change has taken place so fast that children born in late 1980s and onwards cannot remember what life in Poland under communism was like and cannot relate to it. Also, many elderly people, easy victims of romanticizing their own youth, tend to forget. As a result, the uniqueness of Polish transition and transformation, the boldness and efficiency of reforms, and the success that Polish society mastered together, tend to be undermined today both domestically and internationally. Poland has now been a member of the EU for more than 15 years. During that time, Poland’s image on the EU scene evolved from newcomer, through ‘model child’, champion of growth, to – in some respects – a maverick. This volume’s objective is to remind society, old and young, researchers, scholars and practitioners, that Poland’s success is an outcome of well-thought out and bold structural reforms implemented in a swift and timely manner, of society’s support for these reforms, and of third actors’ benign assistance. Looking back on the 30 years since the collapse of communism, and at the over 15 years of EU membership, this book offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and critical insight into factors and processes that have led to today’s Poland.

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Lodz (Department of Entrepreneurship), language: English, abstract: In the following paper I want to pay attention to the SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) Sector in Poland. Researches within this Sector are very important, because that sector is the most dynamic in the whole Economy. Entry and Exit Rates of Businesses are about 10 % in the EU (European Union) and are even more in Poland. Noreen Doyle described it as the backbone for a lasting and effective business environment. As well as in the Transitional Period, which will be examined in detail in this paper, as in the accession phase of Poland to become member of EU, the development of the SME Sector will determine the future of Poland to a great extent. After defining this Sector, I will show the development separated in phases since 1980. In the following chapter, I will try to sum up the most important influencing factors for SMEs. Finally, I will consider some specific problems of Poland joining the EU.

According to the European Commission, two recent policies: the Digital Service Act and the Digital Market Act will allow for the regulation of a significant part of the EU Digital Single Market (DSM), to an extent similar to the creation of the traditional internal market in the early 1990s. The provisions are intended to improve conditions in the EU DSM to ensure that the market is as free and fair as it is safe for users of the digital economy. This interdisciplinary book analyses the impact of digital technologies on specific markets and, more broadly, the society and the economy. It identifies and assesses the different features, challenges, trends and dimensions of the EU DSM, from a legal and economic viewpoint, and also from a Polish perspective. Poland is presented as one of the EU countries participating in the creation of the EU DSM and is analysed alongside the average, as well as the best and the worst performing EU member states and compared with other non-EU members. The book addresses several broad areas in which the implications of digitalisation are particularly visible, and which are important to the average person: giant online platforms, freedom of speech, e-commerce, digital levy, energy infrastructure, and the labour market. The authors have presented opportunities and threats related to the functioning of the digital market. These opportunities and threats are typical of highly developed countries while reflecting the specific features of the EU DSM. The starting point of the considerations are the diverse experiences of the EU member states. The book adds a voice to the public debate on the role of the digital economy in the contemporary world and will be a useful guide for students and researchers in economics, law, and international relations. Chapters 1 and 2 of this book are available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at ww.routledge.com . Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, Berlin School of Economics and Law, course: International Economics, language: English, abstract: This term paper explores the effect of culture on international business. In order to do so, it first evaluates the influence of national culture and then the influence of corporate culture on international management. In the end it presents and analyzes a new framework which argues that these two types of culture interrelate and that both shape international management practices. In 2010 Wal-Mart Inc. has been the world’s top retailer with revenues of US$ mil 405,046. However, they have never managed to establish Wal-Mart Germany since they have entered the market in late 1997. They left the market with huge losses in 2006. “In Germany, analysts say, Wal-Mart never got traction in a market characterized by unrelenting price competition, well-established discounters and the cultural resistance of German shoppers to hypermarkets, which sell fresh vegetables a few aisles away from lawn mowers.”
