This book describes efficient and safe repair operations for pipelines, and develops new methods for the detection and repair of volumetric surface defects in transmission pipelines. It also addresses the physics, mechanics, and applications of advanced materials used for composite repair of corroded pipelines. Presenting results obtained in the European Commission’s INNOPIPES FRAMEWORK 7 programme, it develops long-range ultrasonic and phased array technologies for pipeline diagnostics, and explores their interactions with discontinuities and directional properties of ultrasonic antenna array. The book subsequently shares the results of non-destructive testing for different types of materials applications and advanced composite repair systems, and characterizes the mechanical properties by means of fracture methods and non-destructive techniques. In turn, the book assesses the currently available technologies for reinforcement of pipelines, drawing on the experience gai ned by project partners, and evaluates the recovery of the carrying capacity of pipeline sections with local corrosion damage by means of analytical and numerical procedures. It develops an optimization method based on the planning of experiments and surface techniques for advanced composite repair systems, before validating the numerical models developed and experimentally gauging the effectiveness of composite repair with the help of full-scale hydraulic tests.

There is strong evidence that the oil and gas industry has become increasingly interested in using pipes and risers made of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials. Moreover, oil and gas exploration nowadays has to be conducted in much deeper water depths (500–1500m and deeper), thus requiring more resilient and lighter materials. in this section various applications of FRP in relation to pipes and risers are discussed to familiarise the reader with various FRP and hybrid pipes. The issues affecting the long-term performance of these materials, as well as issues involved with joining pipes and risers are also covered. Finally, the recent trends related to the use of FRP for repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated metallic pipes are presented.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are becoming increasingly popular as a material for rehabilitating aging and damaged structures. Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites explores the use of fiber-reinforced composites for enhancing the stability and extending the life of metallic infrastructure such as bridges. Part I provides an overview of materials and repair, encompassing topics of joining steel to FRP composites, finite element modeling, and durability issues. Part II discusses the use of FRP composites to repair steel components, focusing on thin-walled (hollow) steel sections, steel tension members, and cracked aluminum components. Building on Part II, the third part of the book reviews the fatigue life of strengthened components. Finally, Part IV covers the use of FRP composites to rehabilitate different types of metallic infrastructure, with chapters on bridges, historical metallic structures and other types of metallic infrastructure. Rehabilitation of Metallic Civil Infrastructure Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites represents a standard reference for engineers and designers in infrastructure and fiber-reinforced polymer areas and manufacturers in the infrastructure industry, as well as academics and researchers in the field. Looks at the use of FRP composites to repair components such as hollow steel sections and steel tension members Considers ways of assessing the durability and fatigue life of components Reviews applications of FRP to infrastructure such as steel bridges
