Portland Psalter

Following the critical success of The Portland Psalter: Book One, composer Robert Hawthorne has written additional settings of the alternate psalms and canticles appointed for the Revised Common Lectionary and for other liturgical occasions in the Book of Common Prayer lectionary. Included is the full psalmody appointed for the Easter Vigil, All Saints, the Annunciation, the Visitation, Baptism, Burial of the Dead, Ordinations, and the Celebration of a New Ministry. With this volume, the church is provided with a complete musical psalm resource and more of the fresh and singable settings for which Hawthorne is noted.

In the time-honored tradition of church musicians who compose music for local use, Robert A. Hawthorne created these beautiful new settings of the psalms for his congregation in Oregon. They proved so singable, so sensitively rendered, and so liturgically appropriate that many who heard them felt this music should be more widely available. The Portland Psalter: Book One, brings the first part of Hawthorne's psalter to the larger church. It contains settings for all psalms appointed for the Sunday Eucharist according to the Book of Common Prayer lectionary and the Revised Common Lectionary. Book Two contains the balance of psalm settings for the church year together with pastoral offices and ordination rites and the Easter Vigil.

This is a complete revision of a detailed resource which has been the essential guide for church musicians working in the Episcopal church for over 20 years. A Guide to the Practice of Church Music (1989) was originally written by Marion J. Hatchett, who taught for many years at the Episcopal seminary at Sewanee, was key in developing materials for The Hymnal 1982. This updated revision contains brief, but articulate discussions of the role of music in the church, the variety and nature of music ministries (people, cantor, choirs, organists, directors, instrumentalists, clergy, and music committees); principles for the selection of hymns, psalms, canticles, and other service music and their sources in materials from CPI and beyond; guidance for planning services for all rites of the church in the BCP and the Book of Occasional Services. Updated revision includes hymnals, electronic resources, and materials published since The Hymnal 1982.

In this concise yet comprehensive guide to using and praying the psalms in worship services, John Witvliet first offers summary of key biblical-theological themes related to the practice of worship, and he continues with reflections on every step in the process of preparing to use the psalms in worship, drawing on insights from writings in the history, theology, and pastoral practice of worship, liturgy, and preaching. Including patristic testimonies as "prelude" and both Reformation-era and modern testimonies as two "interludes," the volume also offers a comprehensive list of currently available liturgical and musical resources. Witvliet offers a first -- a book designed to speak at once to both "traditional " and "contemporary " worship practices. The Biblical Psalms in Christian Worship will appeal to a wide range of readers, including college and seminary students, scholars and teachers, church educators, worship leaders, musicians, and librarians.
