Will the world ever recover from COVID-19? As a practicing Neurosurgeon and anesthesiologist, I haven't stop or close my practice. In contrary, I was much busier and happy to be in the frontline saving lives. The book contains not only my review to events occurred as the world began to recover from COVID-19 but also many of my medical and surgical adventures including patients' stories during 2022 as COVID-19 slowing down! This is my fifth book since COVID-19 started! The fear is that COVID-19 has caused a lifetime impact and healed with visible permanent scar. Perhaps, the year 2022 is post-COVID. Living at the Shadows represents the New Era of "Hybrid Remote Living" for years to come! Indeed, COVID may be gone but not its shadow and the long-term impact of Lockdown!! Time has passed and the world hasn't yet looked at how COVID-19 was handled and what lessons have been learned! Instead of celebrating Thanksgiving, among many others, the world witnessed post-COVID aggression! This book presents the author's personal views, reflections and experiences during 2022 post-COVID-19 period covered over 178 chapters and 14 sections! The reader will reflect on what could be the new "norms" and events evolved as the world attempts to recover from the pandemic of "COVID-19"! In 14 sections over 153 chapters.

It is the author’s final documentary book on COVID-19, number Eight as it ended! A total series of Eight books covering, from author’s perspective, the entire journey, since the very beginning of SARS-COV-2 Late 2019. Memoirs are written as events had occurred and interpreted with the author’s personal views and experiences. The book contains much of the author’s philosophically and spiritual meditations as well. The last year of COVID Pandemic is an interesting transition to what is known as the “New Norm”. Many stories of daily events are shared, not only as a frontline Physician, Anesthesiologist and Neurosurgeon but also as a Christian believer with deep spiritual reflections on various events accompanied COVID-19 pandemic! The book contains so much of patients successes, experiences and testimonials. Although it is gone but the historic flashback of the global pandemic, is a living reality and my eight books shall be forever be documentaries to the coming generations of what the world has went through and how we all together in faith in our Lord Jesus survived its brutality! The future of politics after the pandemic COVID-19 exposed the pre-existing conditions of the current global crisis. In contrast, many Asian countries were able to make much more precise interventions. Further, the fact that the authors include University Vice Chancellors, Directors, and Distinguished Professors, suggests that the insights provided in the articles are unparalleled, diverse, boundaryless and unique. The 23 articles in this book are divided in 5 sections namely Families Disconnecting or Reconnecting, Disrupted Lives During Pandemic, Reflecting on Professional Life, Revisiting Organizational Culture and Well-being, and Business and Academia Surviving the Crisis.

The American Psychological Association (2020) reported that some 81% of teenage children (13 to 17 years-of-age) were negatively impacted in a range of ways due to school closures in connection with COVID-19, including 47% who indicated that they “didn’t learn as much as they did in previous years” (para. 21). That perhaps many more than 47% of teenage children in the United States did not learn as much as they did in previous years was documented in the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report which found that “the national average score declines in mathematics for fourth- and eighth-graders were the largest ever recorded in that subject” (Wilburn & Elias, 2022, para. 1). The National Center for Educational Statistics Commissioner commented somewhat hyperbolically that the results showed that “every student was vulnerable to the pandemic’s disruptions” (Wilburn & Elias, 2022, para. 5) and called for a single-minded emphasis on ways to assist students to recover from their trauma and accelerate their learning. Wilburn and Elias (2022) joined those who have pointed out that the learning declines associated with COVID-19 did not occur equitably. The likelihood of a single-minded policy response to change the system and address the achievement gaps exposed by the range of responses to COVID-19 seems small. On the one hand, doubting the sustainability of innovative responses, education historian Larry Cuban referenced the dominant stability of schooling which, if anything, “produces this huge public and professional need to resume schooling as it was” (Young, 2022, para. 18). On the other hand, diverse political agendas will diffuse concerted efforts. Grossman et al. (2021) discussed a pertinent example from Michigan where “public health data, partisanship, and collective bargaining” (p. 637) each played a role in determining school reopening decisions. On this same issue of school reopening, there is credible evidence from Massachusetts that the much maligned and politically explosive masking policies implemented in some schools may have saved lives (Cowger et al., 2022). Roy (2020) asserted that “historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next” (para. 48). The chapters in this volume attest to the willingness of individuals to collaborate in stepping through that portal.
