This book reports on an architectural conservation and reuse project in Anipemza, an Armenian Soviet-era village on the Turkish border, just a few steps away from the important Yererouyk archaeological site. Based on current tourist trends, the book suggests the development of a social system and micro-economic reactivation model to endorse the territory’s numerous cultural resources and preserve the memory of the village that housed the genocide orphanages and the many other stories associated with the village. Further, the development of sustainable tourism will lead to an improved relationship between locals and visitors. Examining the development of a system of strategies able to cope with the existing social, economic and hygiene problems as well as the architectural preservation aims, the book provides valuable guidelines for the local community.

Typical development in the American Southwest often resulted in scraping the desert lands of the ancient living landscape, to be replaced with one that is human-made and dependent on a large consumption of energy and natural resources. This transdisciplinary book explores the natural and built environment of this desert region and introduces development tools for shaping its future in a more sustainable way. Heritage occupies a privileged position within the built environment. Most municipalities in the United States, and nearly all countries around the world, have laws and policies to preserve heritage in situ, seeking to protect places from physical loss and the forces of change. That privilege, however, is increasingly being unsettled by the legacies of racial, economic, and social injustice in both the built environment and historic preservation policy, and by the compounding climate crisis. Though many heritage projects and practitioners are confronting injustice and climate in innovative ways, systemic change requires looking beyond the formal and material dimensions of place and to the processes and outcomes of preservation policy--operationalized through laws and guidelines, regulatory processes, and institutions--across time and socio-geographic scales, and in relation to the publics they are intended to serve. This third volume in the Issues in Preservation Policy series examines historic preservation as an enterprise of ideas, methods, institutions, and practices that must reorient toward a new horizon, one in which equity and sustainability become critical guideposts for policy evolution.

Z has been practising and teaching architecture for nearly 30 years. He has been involved and associated with various educational institutions and professional organizations in a number of countries around the world. Before the current appointment as Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Tasmania, Z spent three years as Lecturer in Environmental Design at the University of Queensland, and two years as Guest Professor in Architectural Design in Nanjing, PR China. He was also the President of the Architectural Science Association ANZAScA for three consecutive terms in 2000–05. Z’s major research interests include design–environment interaction, low-impact architecture and re-integration of architecture as an expression of a multi-disciplinary approach to design.

This open access book provides new perspectives on circular economy and space, explored towards the definition of regenerative territories characterised by healthy metabolisms. Going beyond the mere reuse/recycle of material waste as resources, this work aims to understand how to apply circularity principles to, among others, the regeneration of wastescapes. The main focus is the development over time, and in particular the way how spatial planning and strategies respond to new unpredictable urgencies and opportunities related with territorial metabolisms. The book specifically focuses on living labs environments, where it is possible to tackle complex problems through a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach - including the use of digital spatial decision support environment – which could be able to include all the involved stakeholders. Through a spatial scope of circularity, this book describes several examples including among others ideas from different contexts such as Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium and Vietnam.
