Primary knee arthroplasty (PKA) has a long history and modern mobile bearing knee implants are successfully implanted worldwide since 1977. Primary Knee Arthroplasty focuses on basic science, personal surgical experiences, clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes of PKA, with special focus on challenging knees such as severe varus and valgus deformities with associated bone defects, fixed flexion deformities, soft tissue contractures, and arthrodesed knees. Patella treatment with or without resurfacing is addressed in great detail. Early criterion-based rehabilitation and the patient’s return to participating in sports are discussed as is the management of prosthetic or surgery related complications. Lavishly illustrated to complement the text, Primary Knee Arthroplasty is a ‘must-have’ for all practicing knee replacement surgeons, orthopedic surgeons in training, orthopedic nurses, and physiotherapists with a special interest in knee arthroplasty. Tips and tricks provided by experienced knee surgeons are indispensable for daily clinical practice.

Comprised exclusively of clinical cases covering complex primary and revision total knee arthroplasty, this concise, practical casebook will provide orthopedic surgeons with the best real-world strategies to properly manage the more complicated forms of knee replacement they may encounter. Each chapter is a case that opens with a unique clinical presentation, followed by a description of the diagnosis, assessment and management techniques used to treat it, as well as the case outcome and clinical pearls and pitfalls. Cases included illustrate different management strategies for primary knee arthroplasty, including the varus and valgus knee, flexion contracture and extra-articular deformity, as well as periprosthetic infection and revision total knee arthroplasty, including deficient extensor mechanism, periprosthetic femur fracture and ligamentous instability. Pragmatic and reader-friendly, Complex Primary and Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Clinical Casebook will be an excellent resource for orthopedic surgeons confronted with a challenging knee joint replacement.

This book is published open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. White Paper on Joint Replacement This White Paper details the status of hip and knee arthroplasty care in Germany. Hip and knee replacements are amongst the most frequently performed procedures and usually become necessarily due to age-related wear of the joint, osteoarthritis and fractures of the femoral neck. In light of demographic change, demands with regard to standards of care and the procedures are likely to rise. Contents • This White Paper contains information on indications, procedures, health economic aspects and the healthcare system stakeholders involved. • It portrays current developments with regard to the prevalence of hip and knee arthroplasty, the healthcare situation and quality of care within the chain of medical care. • This book is complemented by a chapter assessing the current situation from an expert perspective with contributions from renowned experts in the fields of science, medical technology and medical practice. This book addresses people involved in shaping and representing the healthcare system from a variety of fields including medical professions, health insurances and health sciences as well as journalists and patient representatives.

More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.

This book presents a compilation of topics related to primary total knee arthroplasty. The chapters cover, in a clear and didactic way, the current themes, written by experts from the area, from different parts of the world. Topics related to the three surgical phases (before surgery, during surgery, and after surgery) are discussed here. This is very important because the surgeon is not a "factory worker." First of all, it is a medicine doctor who has to feel and understand the particularities of each patient. Demographic studies show an aging population. Osteoarthritis and inflammatory diseases are becoming much more prevalent. In addition, a worldwide epidemic of trauma has led to the need for arthroplasties much more frequently. Therefore, total knee arthroplasty will be an increasingly important subject.

This book supplies all the information that the young orthopaedic surgeon needs to know when preparing to perform total or partial knee replacement for the first time and also provides more experienced surgeons with a comprehensive general update on the basics. After an opening section on anatomy and kinematics of the knee, patient management during the pre-, peri-, and postoperative phases is covered in detail with the aid of numerous illustrations. The final section considers postoperative patient evaluation, outcome measurements, and the value of registries. Readers will gain a sound understanding of the scientific basis underlying management decisions, of component design philosophies, and of the rationale for preferences such as mechanical alignment and ligament balancing. The pros and cons of a variety of management choices are explained, and guidance provided on patient selection. Surgical techniques are presented on high-quality videos and many tips and tricks are highlighted to help the inexperienced to cope with challenging situations.

This book offers a comprehensive guide to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that will assist in achieving excellent outcomes based on a sound understanding and technique. After an introductory section on the native knee that covers the anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and patterns of disease, all aspects of primary knee arthroplasty are discussed in detail. Individual chapters are devoted to topics such as acute pain management, the role of technological aids, prosthetic kinematics, alignment targets, unicompartmental arthroplasty, patellar resurfacing, outcome measures, and cost-effectiveness. An extensive section explains the causes and management of potential complications, including aseptic failure, infections, and periprosthetic fracture. The surgical techniques appropriate for revision knee arthroplasty are described separately, and guidelines on how to deal with bone loss, instability, and extensor mechanism failure are provided. The authors are all respected experts from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and Europe.
