Excerpt from Principles of Metal Mining The art of mining must, to a large extent, be learnt at the mine, either underground or at the surface. The diligent student, however, will obtain much aid from external sources, and it is the object of this little work to convey some elementary knowledge of the principles and facts of mining in a form suitable for the instruction of young miners starting in life - to teach them what to observe - and how to interpret their observations. The young student should endeavour to add to his own limited experience the larger experiences of many men in many countries - by reading as well as by conversation with his travelled comrades. He should also accustom himself to make written notes of the peculiarities of all mineral deposits with which he may become acquainted, and of the cost and comparative efficiency of all tools, machinery, and materials which may come under his notice. Excerpt from Elements of Mining Coal mining has been included with metal mining, since while there are differences in the mining conditions the underlying principles are the same and one form of mining affords a contrast to the other. The rela tion of geology to mining has been brought out and accentuated wherever appropriate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Principles of Mining: Valuation, Organization and Administration; Copper, Gold, Lead, Silver, Tin and Zinc This volume is a condensation of a series of lectures delivered in part at Stanford and in part at Columbia Universities. It is intended neither for those wholly ignorant of mining, nor for those long experienced in the profession. The bulk of the material presented is the common heritage of the profession, and if any one may think there is insufficient reference to previous writers, let him endeavor to find to whom the origin of our methods should be credited. The science has grown by small contributions of experience since, or before, those unnamed Egyptian engineers, whose works prove their knowledge of many fundamentals of mine engineering six thousand eight hundred years ago. If I have contributed one sentence to the accumulated knowledge of a thousand generations of engineers, or have thrown one new ray of light on the work, I shall have done my share. I therefore must acknowledge my obligations to all those who have gone before, to all that has been written that I have read, to those engineers with whom I have been associated for many years, and in particular to many friends for kindly reply to inquiry upon points herein discussed. Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Coal Mining In preparing this volume the author has had in mind the needs of two classes of students. First, those who intend to adopt mining engineering as a profession; and, secondly, practical miners seeking to secure certificates as Colliery Managers or Under Managers, or preparing for the examination of the Board of Education. The science of mining so largely consists of practical applications of geology, mechanics, physics, chemistry, and other branches of natural knowledge, that it has proved difficult in many cases to decide what acquaintance with these subjects on the part of the reader to take for granted. The author is hopeful that sufficient information has been given to make the book self-explanatory, but students are urged to study these collateral sciences as fully as circumstances permit.
