Excerpt from Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Construction For a time England led in the manufacture of Portland cement, but Germany took the lead in its production, and, until the past four or five years, has been the foremost country in the produc tion and use of Portland cement. During the past few years, however, the United States has surpassed all other countries as a manufacturer and user of Portland cement. Reinforced Concrete is a text co-authored by Albert Wells Buel and C.S. Hill. This is an in depth work intended for those working in the construction industry. Reinforced Concrete is a detailed examination of the use of reinforced concrete in construction, and is aimed squarely at engineers involved in the design and production of large projects. The work is divided into three parts, with part one authored by Buel and parts two and three authored by Hill. Buel's opening section provides the reader with formulas for calculating the proper usage of reinforced concrete in buildings. From there, in part two, Hill outlines practical examples of reinforced concrete used in a variety of different scenarios, including building construction and cement storage tanks. The book closes with a detailed section on various methods of construction, addressing buildings, bridges, foundations, conduits, and more. Buel and Hill's work is a highly technical affair intended for the professional. It is a well written and thorough examination of reinforced concrete, although the authors do assume the reader is already comfortable with a range of engineering principles. Reinforced Concrete tackles its subject matter with gusto. The authors bring a sense of passion, making this a surprisingly pleasant read. Excerpt from Principles of Reinforced Concrete Construction In the present volume the authors have endeavored to cover, in a systematic manner, those principles of mechanics underlying the design of reinforced concrete, to present the results of all available tests that may aid in establishing coefficients and working stresses, and to give such illustrative material from actual designs as may be needed to make clear the principles involved. The work is essentially divided into two parts: Chapters I to VI treat of the theory of the subject and the results of experiments, while the remaining chapters treat of the use of reinforced concrete in various forms of structures. In Chapter II the properties of plain concrete and of steel are considered to a sufficient extent to give accurate notions of their relation to the general subject in hand. The subjects of adhesion and of relative contraction and expansion are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter III is given a full theoretical treatment of reinforced concrete, avoiding so far as possible empirical rules and methods; and in Chapter IV are presented the most important available tests on beams and columns, analyzed and correlated, so far as may be, with reference to theoretical principles. The subjects of working stresses and economical proportions are considered in Chapter V. In Chapter VI are brought together in convenient form all the formulas and diagrams needed for practical use. Excerpt from The Elements of Reinforced Concrete Building Though many books have been published on the subject of reinforced concrete, none of them have hitherto dealt with the elementary underlying principles thereof in an introductory spirit. It was to meet the requirements of the rudimentary student that the articles which have now been put together in volume form were first prepared and published in the Building News. The book must, therefore, be considered as introductory rather than exhaustive it being intended to clear the ground for further investigation by such readers as may feel.
