Proceeding The 13 Th International Asian Urbanization Conference

These proceedings are issued in the context of the 13th International Asian Urbanization Conference that will be held on January 6 and 8, 2016. This 13th International Asian Urbanization Conference is hosted by Regional Development Study Program, Faculty of Geography, UniversitasGadjahMada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in association with the Asian Urban Research Association (AURA). AURA was established in January 1986 and is administered at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, USA. It is a non-profit research organization whose primary purpose is to promote the study of urbanization and urban growth and to organize Asian Urbanization Conferences. The conferences are biennial (held every other/alternate year) and have resulted in many publications.These proceedings are expected to be one of the publications that may be improved to be a book. The theme of this seminar is Rapid Urbanisation and Sustainable Development in Asia.It is an important topic to discuss since rapid urbanization has currently become a big issue that hits almost Asian countries. In the context of achieving balanced and sustainable development, it is necessary to conduct a study to help solve problems related to urbanization. Because of too broad issues related to urbanization, it is necessary to discuss the theme in groups. The theme is divided into several sub-themes, i.e. Rural-Urban Transformation; Urban Resilient, Risk and Disaster Management Urbanization; Employment and Urban Poverty; Urbanization in The Era of Information and Communication Technology; Urban Planning and Urban Governance; Socio-Economic Impact of Urbanization; Slum Upgrading and Capacity Building; Land, Urban Development and Housing in Asia; Urban Futures and Aspirations; Communities and the Asian City; Natural Resource Governance and Urbanization; Contested Urban Space; Innovative Approaches to Urban Issues; Urbanisation in Southeast Asia: The Challenge and Solution for The Future, Urbanisation and Geography in The Global Era and Managing Urban and Rural Transformation in Indonesia as well. I would like to thank all parties for their support to succeed this seminar.A great number of people contributed to the success of this seminar. This book presents selected articles from the 15th International Asian Urbanization Conference, held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on November 27-30, 2019. Bringing together researchers and professionals in the area of urban planning and development to better understand the growing need for sustainable urban life, it covers topics such as climate change and urban resilience; inclusive and implementable urban governance; smart and green mobility; transformations in land management; livable and smart cities; integrated planning and development; urban slums and affordable housing; sustainable urban finance; and urban renewal and redevelopment.

The comprehensive volume focuses on spatial, temporal, conceptual and empirical approaches to various elements of urban dynamics, environment and urban health. It demonstrates a multidisciplinary account of the significant dimensions of urbanization and urban life. Chapters by leading international experts are presented in sections on urban dynamics, Urban Environmental Issues, Urban Health Problems and Urban Development, Planning and Policies. Each chapter provides a breadth of information on conceptual and empirical studies of urban issues. It enables the readers to understand the interconnections of various vital elements of each urban-related topical issue locally, regionally and globally. Extensive maps, charts, diagrams and tables as cartographic tools facilitate the reader’s understanding. It also outlines an action plan for policy program change in both the developed and less developed countries toward sustainable urban development and environment for better health, prosperity and quality of life of the present and future urban population. It is an indispensable reference for students, research scholars of geography and environmental, medical, and social sciences at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

This book analyses the housing and governance policies of the city of Surakarta, in Indonesia. It addresses the question of whether Surakarta’s strategy for handling the city’s informal sector and marginal settlements shows evidence of sustainability and good governance. The book illustrates current trends in urban development and discussions on effective strategies for improving living conditions in slums on both a global and national scale. Using four main programs as examples, it presents a detailed overview of Surakarta’s housing policies regarding the poor. It critically evaluates the city’s relocation measures and shows that Surakarta’s city government has put into place an effective policy, reaching the poor by inclusive approaches. Influenced by global discussions and best practices, the programs examined are characterized by elements of good governance and Solo’s strategies have already been disseminated to other Indonesian cities. However, the book argues that deficits remain regarding participation and transparency. The work is based on Christian Obermayr's outstanding Master’s thesis, defended in 2013 at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.

This book contains the keynote presentations, invited speeches, and general session papers presented at the 2nd International Symposium on Asia Urban GeoEngineering, which will be held from 24 November to 27 November 2017 in Changsha, China. The contents will cover the topics of (i) Fundamental behavior and constitutive model of geomaterials, (ii) Excavation and slope engineering, (iii) Tunnel and underground engineering, (iv) Foundation and foundation treatment, (v) Environmental geotechnical engineering, (vi) Numerical methods in geotechnical engineering. It will provide an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences of the analysis, design, construction, and maintenance of urban geoengineering among engineers, researchers, and professors in Asian countries. It will improve our knowledge of requirements of geoengineering for a long-term sustainable urban development and the need to protect and preserve our environment.

This book gathers the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Management Science and Engineering Management (ICMSEM 2019), which was held at Brock University, Ontario, Canada on August 5–8, 2019. Exploring the latest ideas and pioneering research achievements in management science and engineering management, the respective contributions highlight both theoretical and practical studies on management science and computing methodologies, and present advanced management concepts and computing technologies for decision-making problems involving large, uncertain and unstructured data. In line with the conference theme, “Transforming the Nation for a Sustainable Tomorrow”, which relates to the United Nations’ 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, it highlights important elements in the planning and development stages to establish design standards beneficial to the environment and its surroundings. The contributions introduce numerous exciting ideas that spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaborations between various specialists in the field of civil engineering.

This cluster of books presents innovative and nuanced knowledge on water resources, based on detailed case studies from South Asia—India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In providing comprehensive analyses of the existing economic, demographic and ideological contexts in which water policies are framed and implemented, the volumes argue for alternative, informed and integrated approaches towards efficient management and equitable distribution of water. These also explore the globalization of water governance in the region, particularly in relation to new paradigms of neoliberalism, civil society participation, integrated water resource management (IWRM), public–private partnerships, privatization, and gender mainstreaming.
