Proceedings Of The Speech Prosody 2008 Conference

This volume contains the revised texts of talks and posters given at the Nordic Prosody X conference, held at the University of Helsinki, in August 2008. The contributions by Scandinavian and other researchers cover a wide range of prosody-related topics from various theoretical and methodological points of view. Although the history of the conference series is Nordic and Scandinavian, the current volume presents studies that are of mainly Baltic origin in the sense that of the eight languages presented in the proceedings only English is not natively spoken around the Baltic Sea. Research issues addressed in the 25 articles include various aspects of speech prosody, their regional variation within and across languages as well as social and idiolectal variation. Speech technology and modelling of prosody are also addressed in more than one article.

The 7th International Conference of the Gruppo di Studi sulla Comunicazione Parlata, dedicated to the memory of Claire Blanche-Benveniste, chose as its main theme Speech and Corpora. The wide international origin of the 235 authors from 21 countries and 95 institutions led to papers on many different languages. The 89 papers of this volume reflect the themes of the conference: spoken corpora compilation and annotation, with the technological connected fields; the relation between prosody and pragmatics; speech pathologies; and different papers on phonetics, speech and linguistic analysis, pragmatics and sociolinguistics. An introduction to the the range of current theoretical approaches to the prosody of spoken utterances, with practical applications of those theories. Prosody is an extremely dynamic field, with a rapid pace of theoretical development and a steady expansion of its influence beyond linguistics into such areas as cognitive psychology, neuroscience, computer science, speech technology, and even the medical profession. This book provides a set of concise and accessible introductions to each major theoretical approach to prosody, describing its structure and implementation and its central goals and assumptions as well as its strengths and weaknesses. Most surveys of basic questions in prosody are written from the perspective of a single theoretical framework. This volume offers the only summary of the full range of current theoretical approaches, with practical applications of each theory and critical commentary on selected chapters. The current abundance of theoretical approaches has sometimes led to apparent conflicts that may stem more from terminological differences, or from differing notions of what theories of prosody are meant to achieve, than from actual conceptual disagreement. This volume confronts this pervasive problem head on, by having each chapter address a common set of questions on phonology, meaning, phonetics, typology, psychological status, and transcription. Commentary is added as counterpoint to some chapters, with responses by the chapter authors, giving a taste of current debate in the field. Signal and Acoustic Modeling for Speech and Communication Disorders demonstrates how speech signal processing and acoustic modeling can be instrumental in early detection and successful intervention with speech deficits resulting from Parkinson’s disease, Autism Spectrum disorder, cleft palate, intellectual disabilities, and neuro-motor impairments. Utilizing some of the most advanced methods in signal and acoustic modeling, this eminent group of contributors show how such technologies can inure to the benefit of healthcare and to society writ large. Paradoxically, what most of us take for granted still remains a Sisyphean battle for those with speech and language disorders, who struggle every day to make themselves heard and understood. The purpose of this book is to stimulate a vibrant discussion among speech scientists, system designers, and practitioners on how to best marshal the latest advances in signal and acoustic modeling to address some of the most challenging speech and communication disorders affecting a wide variety of patient populations across the world.

Most of the papers collected in this book resulted from presentations and discussions undertaken during the V Lablita Workshop that took place at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 23-25, 2011. The workshop was held in conjunction with the II Brazilian Seminar on Pragmatics and Prosody. The guiding themes for the joint event were illocution, modality, attitude, information patterning and speech annotation. Thus, all papers presented here are concerned with theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of speech. Among the papers in this volume, there are different theoretical orientations, which are mirrored through the methodological designs of studies pursued. However, all papers are based on the analysis of actual speech, be it from corpora or from experimental contexts trying to emulate natural speech. Prosody is the keyword that comes out from all the papers in this publication, which indicates the high standing of this category in relation to studies that are geared towards the understanding of major elements that are constitutive of the structuring of speech.

The starting point for this Research Topic was a Priority Programme on experimental research in phonology and phonetics which was funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) from 2006 to 2013. Based on this programme, the aim of this Research Topic is to draw together empirical work in the field of segmental and prosodic processing and representation and phonological theory. Contributions are encouraged that focus on the exploration of human cognitive, articulatory and perceptual abilities dealing with all types of phonetic and phonological entities. More specifically, papers are encouraged that address the interface of the speech sound systems investigated in phonology, the representation about articulation, perception, acquisition and processing established in phonetics and psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics. Topics of investigation could be: (1) phonological representations in the mental lexicon – specified minimally in terms of categorical phonological information or as variable phonetic imprint of the occurrences in the input, (2) sounds and sound-changing processes – systemic and functional aspects, (3) prosodic units such as syllables and metrical feet, as well as the phonological phrases that are connected to syntactic units of the sentence – systemic- properties, processing and phonetic consequences, (4) tones as building blocks of the sentence melody – their relation to the level of linguistic expressions on the one hand, their phonetic realisation (e.g., tonal height and contours) and perception on the other hand. Experimental contributions making use of behavioural methods including eye movement studies and methods like EEG, fMRI, MEG and EPA to investigate production and perception of phonetic and phonological entities are particularly welcome.
