This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the Second Workshop on Multimodal Analyses Enabling Artificial Agents in Human Interaction, MA3HMI 2014, held in Conjunction with INTERSPEECH 2014, in Singapore, Singapore, on September 14th, 2014. The 9 revised papers presented together with a keynote talk were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. They are organized in two sections: human-machine interaction and dialogs and speech recognition.

This book presents the outcomes of the 9th International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems (IWSDS), “Towards creating more human-like conversational agent technologies”. It compiles and provides a synopsis of current global research to push forward the state of the art in dialogue technologies, including advances in the context of the classical problems of language understanding, dialogue management and language generation, as well as cognitive topics related to the human nature of conversational phenomena, such as humor, empathy and social context understanding and awareness.

Considering the emergence of artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, 3D video and television, and holography, it is logical that we should also begin to create applications and businesses driven by these technologies. The 12 chapters of Accentuated Innovations in Cognitive Info-Communication focus on the research and development of state-of-the-art information in Cognitive Info-Communication. This interdisciplinary research area has emerged as a synergy between Info-Communication and Cognitive Sciences. It presents a synthetic, holistic combination of coherent technologies that will become increasingly important in the coming decade. It is a teaching and reference guide for VR, robotics, virtual classrooms and institutions, and medicine at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Markus Kächele offers a detailed view on the different steps in the affective computing pipeline, ranging from corpus design and recording over annotation and feature extraction to post-processing, classification of individual modalities and fusion in the context of ensemble classifiers. He focuses on multimodal recognition of discrete and continuous emotional and medical states. As such, specifically the peculiarities that arise during annotation and processing of continuous signals are highlighted. Furthermore, methods are presented that allow personalization of datasets and adaptation of classifiers to new situations and persons.

This two-volume set LNCS 11574 and 11575 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, VAMR 2019, held in July 2019 as part of HCI International 2019 in Orlando, FL, USA. HCII 2019 received a total of 5029 submissions, of which 1275 papers and 209 posters were accepted for publication after a careful reviewing process. The 80 papers presented in this volume were organized in topical sections named: multimodal interaction in VR, rendering, layout, visualization and navigation, avatars, embodiment and empathy in VAMR, cognitive and health issues in VAMR, VAMR and robots, VAMR in learning, training and entertainment, VAMR in aviation, industry and the military.

This book presents lectures given at the 8th International Workshop on Spoken Dialog Systems. As agents evolve in terms of their ability to carry on a dialog with users, several qualities are emerging as essential components of a successful system. Users do not carry on long conversations on only one topic—they tend to switch between several topics. Thus the authors are observing the emergence of multi-domain systems that enable users to seamlessly hop from one domain to another. The systems have become active social partners. Accordingly, work on social dialog has become crucial to active and engaging human–robot/agent interaction. These new systems call for a coherent framework that guides their actions as chatbots and conversational agents. Human–Robot/Agent assessment mechanisms naturally lend themselves to this task. As these systems increasingly assist humans in a multitude of tasks, the ethics of their existence, their design and their interaction with users are becoming crucial issues. This book discusses the essential players and features involved, such as chat-based agents, multi-domain dialog systems, human–robot interaction, social dialog policy, and advanced dialog system architectures.
