Profiling The Unemployed

Based on data from two regions in Ireland, identifies the probability that a new entrant to unemployment will become a long-term unemployed. Considers their education and training, the way they are looking for work, the distribution of unemployment durations, etc.

This study used data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics to examine 3 groups of the unemployed population: the seldom unemployed; the always unemployed; and the chronically unemployed (unemployed between 48% and 99% of their time in the labour force). The report presents data on the share of total unemployment for each group as well as on chronic unemployment by sex, education level, age, region, and for members of visible minorities and people with disabilities.
