Heterocyclic Chemistry, Volume 7, reviews critically the heterocyclic literature published mainly in 1994. The first two chapters are given over to reviews. The first review surveys useful synthetic routes to polyfunctional pyrroles and pyrazoles, starting from conjugated azoalkenes. The synthesis and reactions of pyrroles, indoles, carbazoles, and related fused heterocyclic ring systems from the year 2012 are reviewed in this monograph. Pyrroles and indoles are treated in separate sections; ring-forming reactions are discussed by bond disconnection. Other sections include reactivity of the parent rings, reactions of side chains, C–H activation/organometallic reactions, and examples in total synthesis.

Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry Volume 5 deals critically with original material selected essentially from the 1992 heterocyclic literature. Chapters 1 and 2 are given over to reviews: in the first, SO2 extrusion from five-membered rings is discussed by R.A. Aitken and colleagues, which completes last year's review on this topic. The second review presents a review of 2-acylamino-3-dimethylaminopropenoates in heterocyclic synthesis. The chapters are arranged according to ring sizes as in the previous volumes and are supported by references, numerous diagrams and a subject index.
