This book is a comprehensive review of recent developments in the field of the protection of relevant buildings belonging to the cultural heritage. It collects the papers presented at the first International Conference PROHITECH 09 (Rome, Italy, June 2009). The latest progress in theoretical and experimental research on the seismic protection of existing constructions, including the relevant output of the EC funded PROHITECH International Research Project on the a oeEarthquake Protection of Historical Buildings by Reversible Mixed Technologiesa, is presented under the following topics: Conservation of the Religious Heritage; Rehabilitation of Old Bridges; Old Timber Structures; Cultural Heritage in China, Korea and Japan; Modern Heritage; The use of FRP in Structural Restoration; Passive Control; Rehabilitation of Medinas; Monitoring and Diagnosis; Study Cases; Innovative Materials and Techniques; Numerical Analyses; Traditional Restoration Techniques; Intervention Strategies; Vulnerability to Man-Made Hazards; Vulnerability to Natural Hazards; Experimental Analyses; Reversible Mixed Techniques. The aim of the book is to transfer the findings of scientists and experts involved in research, codification and application into common practice, giving a complete framework of the most recent tendencies in this field, and so providing a valuable contribution to the efforts in saving human lives and reducing both economic and cultural losses due to catastrophic events.

The book will focus on international and national regulation of industrial heritage sites, from an eminently practical viewpoint it will include studies of the Unesco rules, European Union regulation and Spanish law. It will then centre on a practical application of the law to the preservation of the industrial heritage of the Valencia region, with special emphasis on two major sites: The Sagunto Cement Factory and the Traditional Methods of Production for the Production of Ceramic Tiles.

In their growing awareness of the need to keep alive Canada's heritage, individuals, community groups, and small historical societies have long felt the need for a basic guide to the preservation of buildings, particularly buildings which, though they may not warrant provincial or federal protection, are nevertheless important to the history and values of their communities. Using the knowledge gained from many years of experience in various government departments and her familiarity with several successful building conversation projects, Ann Falkner has written this practical handbook for those concerned about preserving heritage structures. She covers clearly and in detail the various problems to be faced and actions to be taken, and analyses the assistance available through legislation at all three levels of government. Without Our Past? deals with inventories and how they are conducted, and, through a series of concrete examples, with the evaluation and selection of worthwhile buildings. It explains acquisition procedures for all types of properties, municipal powers under provincial planning acts, and control through specific zoning. It offers suggestions on how to re-use an outdated structure and how to create a compatible environment around a building, and it points out the value of publicity and local interest in gaining general support and cooperation. In a separate chapter expenses and finances are covered, including fund raising and the increasing monetary benefits of conservation.

This book applies a behavioral point of view to individuals’ fire safety in historic buildings. It outlines theoretical and operative issues, based on recent studies and international guidelines. Firstly, critical issues for Building Heritage fire safety are widely discussed, by including the modelling of human factor and man-environment-fire interference in these architectural spaces. A significant part of the book includes a discussion on emergency modeling and simulation. A source code for representing the fire evacuation process (including man-evacuation facilities interactions) is offered to the reader. Methods for effectiveness assessment of risk-reducing solutions are provided and tested in a case-study. Being a structured approach to occupants-related problems during a fire in heritage buildings, it offers an innovative methodology and practical examples that researchers and designers can use as a guide when proposing and testing solutions. Evaluation indexes for effectiveness assessment (also useful for future guidelines or handbooks) are included. Readers are encouraged to understand these indexes within the proposed approach, so as to extend their applications and possibilities of how to introduce human behaviors-based solutions in other fields. Lastly, attention is focused on the proposal and evaluation of low-impact and not-invasive strategies, such as ones based on wayfinding elements. From this point of view, the pros and cons of wayfinding systems are discussed: these are important today, especially for fire-safety designers, because of the ongoing innovations in this field.
