In the companion volume to the acclaimed Witness of my Life, Jean-Paul Sartre reveals his life as a soldier, a German prisoner, and a man of Resistance through letters between himself and his “beloved Beaver,” Simone de Beauvoir. Quiet Moments in a War tells the story of Jean-Paul Sartre at the peak of his powers and renown through the exchanging of ideas and intimacies with Simone de Beauvoir from 1940 to 1963. In the pages of this book, readers will find details on Sartre’s war and his path to fame with the publication of his major works. From September 1939 to June 1940, Sartre wrote Beauvoir almost daily as he waited from the frontlines for a German attack. While it was a time of fear and uncertainty, it doubled as a time of great productivity for Sartre as he completed the novel The Age of Reason and sketched out Being and Nothingness. This collection of the letters between Sartre and Beauvoir completes the extraordinary correspondence of one of modern history’s most celebrated couples while documenting the emergence of a great intellectual figure.

Quiet Moments at the Boulders is a collection of thoughts, reflections, memories and experiences in short reads. If you’ve ever wondered where the author was coming from when Four Summits to Truce was written, what was behind it, what experiences led to the story, what insights inspired those words, here it is in Quiet Moments at the Boulders, glances and experiences, lessons and expansions, the sad and funny journey that led to a redeemed life. It is a collection of heartfelt thoughts and touching memoirs, lessons of recovery and underserved favor, a life that went from bad to good, reckless to ordinary, chaotic to calm, disruptive to productive, little glances of the moments that led to that. How often do we marvel at the ordinary life which was accomplished by something extraordinary? How often do we marvel at what our life is compared to what it would have been without the miracle of what He did for us? We operate under an incredible and fragile state of grace, we truly do. That’s all there is to it.

The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre? The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafés create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part. This volume presents an international group of scholars who consider cafés as sites of intellectual discourse from across Europe during the long modern period. Drawing on literary theory, history, cultural studies and urban studies, the contributors explore the ways in which cafes have functioned and evolved at crucial moments in the histories of important cities and countries - notably Paris, Vienna and Italy. Choosing these sites allows readers to understand both the local particularities of each café while also seeing the larger cultural connections between these places. By revealing how the café operated as a unique cultural context within the urban setting, this volume demonstrates how space and ideas are connected. As our global society becomes more focused on creativity and mobility the intellectual cafés of past generations can also serve as inspiration for contemporary and future knowledge workers who will expand and develop this tradition of using and thinking in space.

They are one of the world's legendary couples. Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre - those passionate, free-thinking Existentialist philosopher-writers - had a committed but notoriously open union that generated no end of controversy. Through original interviews and access to new primary sources, Hazel Rowley portrays them up close: their romantic entanglements, their Parisian café society circle, their discussions of each other's work. Theirs is a great story - and a great story is precisely what they most wanted their lives to be.

The classic tale of a young soldier's harrowing experiences in the trenches, widely acclaimed as the greatest war novel of all time—featuring an Introduction by historian Norman Stone. Now a Netflix Film. When twenty-year-old Paul Bäumer and his classmates enlist in the German army during World War I, they are full of youthful enthusiam. But the world of duty, culture, and progress they had been taught to believe in shatters under the first brutal bombardment in the trenches. Through the ensuing years of horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principle of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another. Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel not only portrays in vivid detail the combatants' physical and mental trauma, but dramatizes as well the tragic detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home. Remarque's stated intention—“to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war"—remains as powerful and relevant as ever, a century after that conflict's end." Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author's life and times.

But first, I want to thank you For your goodness, love and grace, Knowing that through you, my Lord Im protected in all I face. In this quiet moment As I open my soul to thee, I feel your love and inner peace That youll do whats best for me. Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am your God. I will strengthen you, and help you, and uphold you with my right hand of justice. Isaiah 41: 10 Sights Of Nature The beauty of the country The echo through the hills, The different sounds of nature Wild flowers blooming in the fields. Running, catching butterflies Wading bare foot in a stream, The sun is shining through the trees Casting shadows from its beam. How beautiful the country How marvelous is our God, The magnificence of your creation For this we thank you God! I will meditate on the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works.
