Obwohl die DDR nunmehr ein abgeschlossenes Kapitel in der deutschen Geschichte geworden ist, halt die Auseinandersetzung um das, was von ihr bleibt, auch im Abstand von mehr als zehn Jahren an. Selbst nach dem deutsch-deutschen Literaturstreit unmittelbar nach der Wende, der seinerseits schon Ruckblicken und Bilanzierungen ausgesetzt wurde, bleibt der Stellenwert der Literatur in und aus der DDR ein umstrittenes Terrain. Ungeachtet dessen, dass es Einhelligkeit in literarischen Fragen ohnehin nicht geben kann, sind die Urteile zur Literatur der DDR naturlich auch von den Erfahrungen und Erlebnissen mit der DDR gepragt. In diesem Band haben wir uns fur eine Sicht von aussen und von innen gleichermassen interessiert.

Diese Studie bettet die Protokolliteratur zunächst einmal in die internationale Oral History-Bewegung ein, erklärt die besonderen Umstände ihrer Entstehung in der DDR und geht auf ihre problematischen Aspekte ein. Der Hauptteil sichtet dann die DDR-Protokolliteratur und ordnet sie bestimmten thematischen Gesichtspunkten zu. Die strukturelle Vorgangsweise arbeitet die allgemeinen Bedingungen und die typischen Erfahrungen heraus, die die DDR in ihrem Alltag und die Schwierigkeiten des deutsch-deutschen Zusammenwachsens dokumentieren.

In this definitive study, David Bathrick examines East German culture both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. Bathrick argues that dissident East German writers were unique among East European literary intellectuals in that they attempted “to open up alternative spaces for public speech from within [the] framework” of Marxism and state socialism. According to Bathrick, “the fact that some of them had been censored, hunted, questioned, and ridiculed does not belie the fact that they were also—and sometimes even simultaneously—privileged, nurtured, courted, and coddled. . . . It was precisely their function on ‘both sides’ of the power divide, as official and nonofficial voices within the whole, which defined a particular kind of intellectual in the GDR.” Bathrick applies his insights into this “particular kind of intellectual” to a wide range of topics. He compares oppositional culture in East Germany to radical cultures elsewhere, examines the complex political and cultural relations of East and West Germany, traces the anguished history of the East German avant-garde, and describes the troubled effort to develop a revolutionary theatrical tradition in East Germany. The book also includes nuanced insights into the collapse of the East German political order in the late 1980s and more recent revelations about the collaboration of allegedly oppositional writers with the Stasi (state police). In his treatment of these and other issues, Bathrick enters hotly contested territory. Yet he brings clarity and scrupulous fairness to these issues that are still very much alive in Germany—and elsewhere—today.

Over the past two decades there has been a growing attention to environmental matters in both scientific research and public interest. The Transatlantic Collapse of Urban Renewal examines how postwar thinkers from both sides of the Atlantic considered urban landscapes radically changed by the political and physical realities of sprawl, urban decay, and urban renewal. With a sweep that encompasses New York, London, Berlin, Philadelphia, and Toronto, among others, Christopher Klemek traces changing responses to the challenging issues that most affected the lives of the world’s cities. In the postwar decades, the principles of modernist planning came to be challenged—in the grassroots revolts against the building of freeways through urban neighborhoods, for instance, or by academic critiques of slum clearance policy agendas—and then began to collapse entirely.
