Excerpt from Range and Pasture Management There remains now the big economic problem of revegetating the pasture and of maintaining such a nutritious forage cover as will be consistent with a maximum use of the lands. For the accomplishment of this, three things are necessary. There should be maintained at all times an effective plant cover which will bind the soil firmly and so preserve it against erosion and other destructive agencies. It is also necessary to determine which are the most important forage plants, as well as the objectionable pasture species, and how the desirable forage types may most expediently be improved. Furthermore, the foraging animals should be handled in such a way as to secure the largest percentage of offspring and of marketable stock consistent with economical production. Excerpt from Rest-Rotation Grazing: A Management System for Bunchgrass Ranges Now a system called rest-rotation grazing looks like it will do the job. This system was developed from studies carried out at the Burgess Spring Experimental Range in Lassen County, in northeastern California, from 1936 to 1951. There we learned that periodic rest from grazing is the key to improvement of bunchgrass range. A practical test of this system is now in prog ress on the Harvey Valley cattle allotment of the Lassen National Forest. The test will run for about 20 years. After only 7 years, there are definite indications that the grazing system is working. Figure 1. A deteriorated site on a mountain range. It is producing only a fraction of its former output. Excerpt from Range Preservation and Its Relation to Erosion Control on Western Grazing Lands To complete the study will require a number of years, but the data already available on the decrease in the productivity of the soil resulting from erosion, the increase in the difficulty of revegetating the lands as erosion and soil depletion advance and the influence of range preservation in preventing destructive erosion are of so much importance that their publication, together with the accom panying recommendations, should stimulate closer Observation on the part of those in charge of the range lands throughout the West and bring about improvements in the management of these lands which, in view Of the needs Of' the Nation, should not be deferred. Excerpt from Range Grasses of California To apply the best methods of range management, the stockman must be able to judge the condition of the range for himself. To do this he must know the principal forage plants, their period of life, and their requirements as to reproduction. The illustrated keys, brief descriptions, and pictures of the plants should assist him in this. The purpose of this bulletin is (1) to familiarize stockmen with the more important grasses of the State and show where they grow, and (2) to point out their forage value and the conditions under which the different kinds reproduce under grazing. This is a necessary pre liminary to the development of state-wide range reseeding methods now under investigation. In the preparation of this paper the authors have made use of the valuable collections and data in the grass herbarium of the United States Department of Agriculture. Several Of the illustrations were lent by the Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
