Re Generation Europe

This book sets out a vision for another Europe: one that cherishes diversity, listens to its public, and is sensitive to its younger generations. It is a call for a re-imagination of the European project, as a response to the three biggest crises that the EU has had to endure – the Euro-zone crash, the refugee crisis, and Brexit. These crises demonstrate a fundamental weakness at the heart of the EU: it struggles with making legitimate decisions when member states disagree about how to proceed. This book offers a guide out of this mess. It discusses how the EU can make better use of the trust between its citizens, and how it can reform itself internally so that it can actually listen to those citizens. It also offers ten original policy proposals – from the scandalously ambitious to the prosaic – to show what another Europe could look like.

The material in this book is based upon an academic conference held in Liverpool in 1990 which explored West European urban development and strategies by looking at commissioned studies of cities in six EC countries - Britain, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Germany and Italy.

Recent developments in cultural heritage policy and practice in South-East Europe. Since 2003, the Council of Europe–European Commission joint initiative known as the “Ljubljana Process: rehabilitating our common heritage” has set out to unlock the potential of the region’s rich immovable cultural heritage, working with national authorities to accelerate the development of democratic, peaceful and open societies, stimulate local economies and improve the quality of life of local communities. In 2003, the region was overcoming the effects of the traumatic transition to a market economy. Since then, it has been hit hard by the economic crisis of 2008, and more recently by an unprecedented migration crisis. Despite the challenges facing the region in the field of cultural heritage, the present situation can be seen as an opportunity to use the lessons learned from the Ljubljana Process to avoid the traps laid by the cumulative and sometimes inconsistent heritage-protection legislation of the past 60 years, overcoming the legacy of the top-down approach that privileges the “high art” canon rather than the local heritage that reflects the culture of everyday life and which often means more to most people. The authors suggest that selecting from innovative practice elsewhere could make heritage management smarter so that it more directly meets the needs of modern society and individual citizens. This volume reflects the views of international experts involved in the joint initiative and complements earlier studies on the impact of the Ljubljana Process by experts from within the region (Heritage for development in South-East Europe, edited by Gojko Rikolović and Hristina Mikić, 2014) and from the London School of Economics and Political Science (The wider benefits of investment in cultural heritage. Case studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, edited by Will Bartlett, 2015).

We are at a crucial point in time: a moment of transition as important as the emergence of Homo sapiens, or the beginning of civilisation after the Neolithic Revolution. Paradoxically, the triumph of the West - also called 'globalisation' - means the death of Europe and European man. Our destiny hangs between two options: either to complete the triumph of the egalitarian conception of the world, which will bring about the end of history, or to promote a historical regeneration. Nietzsche prophesied that the Earth will eventually belong to either the last man or to the superman. There are no other alternatives.

Story is a powerful tool for teaching and learning. This is a book of stories about ministry in the underground church of communist Romania (1980s). It introduces a never-ending story about the regenerative process of true discipleship, which reaches today to the second, third, and fourth generations. These stories will inspire deeper reflection on challenging missional issues that will certainly be encountered by the next generation of international workers.
