Real Time Traveler Information Systems

This synthesis reports on the state of the practice in real-time traveler information systems. Emphasis is placed on the needs and expectations of travelers, the current status of a variety of traveler information systems in the United States, available and emerging data sources, and business models for sustaining traveler information. This synthesis will benefit state DOT transportation managers and others that provide or seek to provide affordable, accurate, timely, and effective information in a format that travelers can use.

This report from the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2), which is administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, sets out requirements for travel time reliability within a performance-based planning process. The research includes an effort to determine the economic value of improvements in travel time reliability by applying options theory from the financial sector. The report includes two succinct tables that describe requirements for person and freight trips for reliable transport, as well as a forecast of the year 2030 under alternative assumptions that may influence travel time reliability.

This Conditions and Performance (C&P) report is intended to provide decision makers with an objective appraisal of the physical conditions, operational performances, and financing mechanisms of highways, bridges, and transit systems based both on the current state of these systems and on the projected future state of these systems under a set of alternative future investment scenarios. This report offers a comprehensive, data-driven background to support the development and evaluation of legislative, program, and budget options at all levels of government. This report consolidates conditions, performance, and financial data provided by States, local governments, and mass transit operators to provide a national-level summary. Illus.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th East European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2007, held in Varna, Bulgaria, in September/October 2007. The 23 revised papers presented together with three invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 77 submissions.
