Realizations

Thomas W. Polger and Lawrence A. Shapiro provide a full investigation of multiple realisation - the idea that minds can be realised in ways other than the human brain. They cast doubt on the hypothesis and give an alternative framework for understanding explanations in the cognitive sciences, and in chemistry, biology, and related fields.

It is shown that a positive real immittance function F(s) is of one of eight categories. The category can be recognized by the sign polarities of three test values that are functions of the coefficients of F(s). If F(s) is of a certain category, then 1/F(s) can only be of some other categories. According to the categories of F(s) and 1/F(s) the immittance function can be realized (1) either by an RC or an RL network with positive elements, (2) by an RLC network with exclusively positive elements and an equivalent model circuit, or (3) only by model circuits. A model circuit is an RLC ladder structure with one negative branch element. The RC, RL, RLC, and model circuits have several equivalences.

A central area of study in Differential Geometry is the examination of the relationship between the purely algebraic properties of the Riemann curvature tensor and the underlying geometric properties of the manifold. In this book, the findings of numerous investigations in this field of study are reviewed and presented in a clear, coherent form, including the latest developments and proofs. Even though many authors have worked in this area in recent years, many fundamental questions still remain unanswered. Many studies begin by first working purely algebraically and then later progressing onto the geometric setting and it has been found that many questions in differential geometry can be phrased as problems involving the geometric realization of curvature. Recent discussions of self-realization have devolved into unscientific theories of self-help. However, this vague and often misused concept is connected to many important individual and social problems. As long as its meaning remains unclear, it can be abused for social, political, and commercial malpractices. To combat this issue, this book shares perspectives from scholars of various philosophical traditions. Each chapter takes new steps in asking what the meaning of self-realization is–both in terms of what it means to understand who or what one is, and also in terms of how one can, or should, fulfilll oneself. The conceptual elucidations achieved from both theoretical and practical perspectives allow for a more mature awareness of how to deal with discourses on self-realization and, in any case, can help to demystify the subject.
