In aquaculture production systems, the hatchery phase is the most challenging as larvae are prone to infections and disease from microbial agents causing mass mortalities. A holistic microbial management regime concept is developed with the hatchery managed as a set of compartments: (1) the water column (planktonic); (2) surfaces (biofilm); (3) the larvae themselves; and (4) feeds (live and formulated). Emphasis on the use of the microbial community as a whole to maintain larvae in high health with various prophylactic strategies is discussed. A range of treatment strategies are considered, including antibiotics, bacteriophage therapy, quorum sensing inhibition and microbial predation. Developing innovations and future trends in microbial management and biocontrol are outlined.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector in the world. With demand for seafood increasing at astonishing rates, the optimization of production methods is vital. One of the primary restrictions to continued growth is the supply of juveniles from hatcheries. Addressing these constraints, Advances in aquaculture hatchery technology provides a comprehensive, systematic guide to the use of current and emerging technologies in enhancing hatchery production. Part one reviews reproduction and larval rearing. Aquaculture hatchery water supply and treatment systems, principles of finfish broodstock management, genome preservation, and varied aspects of nutrition and feeding are discussed in addition to larval health management and microbial management for bacterial pathogen control. Closing the life-cycle and overcoming challenges in hatchery production for selected invertebrate species are the focus of part two, and advances in hatchery technology for spiny lobsters, shrimp, blue mussel, sea cucumbers and cephalopods are all discussed. Part three concentrates on challenges and successes in closing the life-cycle and hatchery production for selected fish species, including tuna, striped catfish, meagre, and yellowtail kingfish. Finally, part four explores aquaculture hatcheries for conservation and education. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Advances in aquaculture hatchery technology is an authoritative review of the field for hatchery operators, scientists, marine conservators and educators. Provides a comprehensive guide to the use of technologies in enhancing hatchery production Examines reproduction and larval rearing, including genetic improvement and microdiets Discusses challenges in hatchery production of specific species

Accounting for nearly half, 45%, of the world's food fish including fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and amphibians, aquaculture is currently one of today's fastest growing production sectors. Aquaculture Microbiology and Biotechnology examines the advances and research in genetic manipulation and biotechnology that provide the foundation and fuel for this rapid growth. It discusses commonly used methods such as chromosome manipulation and hormone treatment and the application of these techniques to produce triploid, tetraploid, haploid, gynogenetic and androgenetic fish.

This book sheds light on the major functions of microbial communities in aquaculture ecosystems, showing that by recycling nutrients, degrading organic matter and preventing disease outbreaks, a variety of microbes are truly beneficial to a wide range of aquaculture industries. It discusses how deteriorating environmental quality enables some microbial strains to trigger disease, describes the development of highly sustainable tools to improve water quality, and identifies crucial factors that endanger microbial homeostasis in aquaculture ecosystems. The book also covers post-antibiotic approaches for preventing and treating opportunistic microbial infections based on harnessing environmental and fish-associated microbial communities. Furthermore, it explores how manipulating and engineering these complex microbial communities using bio-agents such as probiotics, phages, natural nutritional additives, or with fine-tuned biofilters will open the door for new ways to develop a more sustainable and cost-effective aquaculture industry. Including an accessible presentation of modern high-throughput sequencing technology to identify host-microbial interactions in aquaculture ecosystems, this book is a valuable resource for scientists, aquaculture and fishery experts, sustainability enthusiasts and scholars in the areas of biology and marine agriculture.

Microbial Diversity: Current Perspectives and Potential Applications is woven around the recent global perceptions of microbial diversity in its all embracing facets. Diversity perspectives are discussed in the context of ecosystem dynamics, taking into consideration environments that are rather unique to microorganisms. Considerable thrust is placed on the role that microorganisms play in sustainable production systems. Microbe-plant interaction arena is highlighted through the discussion of mycorrhizal partners, on which depends not only the plant community structure but also abatement of abiotic and biotic stresses. Other mutualist, rhizobia gets its due coverage whereas plant disease component carries examples from both, fungal and viral disease point of view. Considerable emphasis is placed on a discussion of the environmental issues such as the approaches that will lead to newer bioremediation technologies. No discussion of microbial diversity is complete without their implications in animal and human health. Discussed in this context are L-arginases in cancer therapy as also bioactives from cyanobacteria. Genomics and pathogenicity of two groups of viruses, viz., blue tongue and flaviviruses is highlighted whereas keratinophilic fungal forms are discussed in the context of dermatophytic infections. This volume also carries a fair number of articles on commercial microbiology.
