Reconstructing The House Of Culture

Notions of culture, rituals and their meanings, the workings of ideology in everyday life, public representations of tradition and ethnicity, and the social consequences of economic transition- these are critical issues in the social anthropology of Russia and other postsocialist countries. Engaged in the negotiation of all these is the House of Culture, which was the key institution for cultural activities and implementation of state cultural policies in all socialist states. The House of Culture was officially responsible for cultural enlightenment, moral edification, and personal cultivation-in short, for implementing the socialist state's program of "bringing culture to the masses." Surprisingly, little is known about its past and present condition. This collection of ethnographically rich accounts examines the social significance and everyday performance of Houses of Culture and how they have changed in recent decades. In the years immediately following the end of the Soviet Union, they underwent a deep economic and symbolic crisis, and many closed. Recently, however, there have been signs of a revitalization of the Houses of Culture and a re-orientation of their missions and programs. The contributions to this volume investigate the changing functions and meanings of these vital institutions for the communities that they serve.

Mixed Emotions and Indigenous Language Maintenance in Post-Disaster Reconstruction Communities examines the interplay between emotions and Indigenous language maintenance among Paiwan families after they relocated to post-disaster reconstruction communities in Taiwan. In the view of sociocultural theory, mixed emotions mediate social action by connecting language resources and family language maintenance experiences. Against the context of Indigenous families and reconstruction communities, the author utilizes orientation activities to investigate mixed emotions, language practices, and language socialization among Paiwan family members. This book also explores the multimodal space of emotions, language practices in Indigenous language, and the language repertoire from micro-level family practices to meso- and macro-level community mobilization. The results of this volume shed light on emotions in family language policy, family communication in the teaching of heritage knowledge in Indigenous societies, and most importantly, Indigenous language maintenance in the context of post-disaster reconstruction. This book contributes to the documentation of the Paiwan language in the reconstruction communities, language equality, and the maintenance of the Indigenous language in post-disaster reconstruction communities. It can be used to develop the conceptual underpinnings of Indigenous language policies, Indigenous education programs, and Indigenous language maintenance practices.

This book investigates the mappings of ideas about sexual and ethnic difference in Galilee during the centuries following the last Jewish revolt against the Roman Empire—centuries that saw major socioeconomic changes in the region, as well as the development of that small community of Jewish authors/authorities known as the rabbis. It examines aspects of Jewish identity as these were constructed both in the earliest rabbinic texts and “on the ground,” through practices that created (or contested) topographies of self vs. other, male vs. female, and insider vs. outsider. Three sociospatial sites, which the author explores through texts and archaeology, ground this study: house, marketplace, and courtyard/alleyway. The book questions long-standing historical narratives that have cast ancient Jewish women as “private,” housebound creatures and Jewish men as “public,” social, mobile agents. Offering useful strategies for working with, and combining, literary and nonliterary material remains, it fleshes out a richer narrative of Jewish antiquity.
