This textbook seeks to determine the current state-of-the-art of reconstructive urethral surgery and to identify new trends in this subspecialty of reconstructive urology. To this end, inter- tionally known experts and opinion leaders in the field were invited to Hamburg, Germany to discuss and demonstrate today’s commonly used surgical techniques. Dialogues that took place during this convention, held in the spring of 2001 at the General Hospital in Hamburg-Harburg, are presented in book chapter format in this volume. The text is rounded out by live recordings of the most important of the surgical procedures. (DVD included with this compendium. ) Our desire was to publish, in close collaboration with Springer, a surgical textbook that p- sents the most important basic and modern techniques in urethral surgery. These techniques are underscored with simple and instructive drawings and »live surgery« video clips. We consciously chose not to make the text an all-inclusive surgical text. Thus the techniques included reflect a deliberate subjective selection on the part of the editors. We focused on the »renaissance« of graft techniques. Much of the material is concentrated on buccal mucosal and preputial grafts Two-stage surgical techniques, particularly for complex cases or patients who have undergone multiple previous operations, are also included. This book is written for all urologists.

This lavishly illustrated operative atlas consists of detailed, step-by-step descriptions of the procedures used in reconstruction of the female urinary tract from the kidney to the urethra. It is based on the extensive operative experience of two very experienced reconstructive urologists. The procedures described have been devised compeletely afresh or considerably developed during the course of many thousands of operations and thus represent a unique collection. Many of the procedures and "tips" have not been published before. The approach taken throughout the book is a functional one. The basic principles underlying reconstrucive urology are outlined and emphasis is placed on the fact that the logic of each procedure is dictated by a thorough understanding of the particular functional abnormality involved. In addition there is a wealth of practical tips, observations and clinical pearls built up over many years of surgical experience which help to reduce complications and make operations easier. Each operative procedure is described by a sequence of colour photographs with running captions explaining the pitfalls and points of particular importance at each stage. It will be an indispensible guide to reconstructive urology for urologists and gynaecologists alike.

Urinary symptoms in women have a very high prevalence rate. While the storage function of the bladder is similar in both genders, voiding function has marked differences with obvious anatomic and physiological genitourinary distinctions. Despite all advances in contemporary diagnostics and imaging, female bladder outlet obstruction and urethral stricture disease remain a conundrum to be deciphered in clinical practice. It is also seen that the female voiding symptoms and bladder outlet obstruction are poorly understood entities; which is also evident from the fact that Urethral dilatation in women is still a widely practiced procedure. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of female voiding disorders leading to bladder outlet obstruction and helps identify the women who will actually need reconstructive surgeries. The book begins with what is normal female voiding and then goes on to describe the various definitions of female bladder outlet obstruction along with controversies in Urodynamic diagnosis . As the functional causes are more common than actual strictures, this book elucidates on the knowledge of each of these differentials with their basic understanding and treatment outline, further throwing knowledge on the anatomical causes like pelvic organ prolapse and female urethral stricture. A separate section is dedicated to female urethral surgical anatomy and urethral reconstruction for urethral stricture as well as pelvic fracture urethral injury in females.
