In the 1870s, Gus Hornsby spread the game of American football around the world like an evangelist and helped establish it in the U.S. heartland. Hornsby seemed destined for greatness as a journalist, inventor, explorer and entrepreneur. His arrogance, greed and an intractable gambling addiction, however, drove him to criminality and cast him into obscurity. But this public ruin led to his greatest accomplishment in prison: personal redemption. Surprisingly, Hornsby's meteoric rise and fall intersected with towering influencers of the time, including the women and men who would pioneer the "first-wave" feminist movement in the United States. This book explores their unexpected connections and interweaves their stories--along with details of the first American football game in the Midwest--to reveal elements of a pivotal moment in American history, both in feminism and sports. More than a biography of a person, it is a story about America--brash, imaginative and seemingly limitless in resources and creativity, but overly self-assured and wildly reckless.

Through courtroom dramas from 1865 to 1920 - of men forced to jump from moving cars when trainmen refused to stop, of women emotionally wrecked from the trauma of nearly missing a platform or street, and women barred from first class ladies' cars because of the color of their skin - Barbara Welke offers a dramatic reconsideration of the critical role railroads, and streetcars, played in transforming the conditions of individual liberty at the dawn of the twentieth century. The three-part narrative, focusing on the law of accidental injury, nervous shock, and racial segregation in public transit, captures Americans' journey from a cultural and legal ethos celebrating manly independence and autonomy to one that recognized and sought to protect the individual against the dangers of modern life. Gender and race become central to the transformation charted here, as much as the forces of corporate power, modern technology and urban space.

Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... for any and all kinds of paper and paper products, and any and all merchandise manufactured from paper and paper products, by mills of the State of Wisconsin or elsewhere. It is further admitted that thereafter each of the manufacturing corporations defendant separately entered into a contract with the General Paper Company, making that company its exclusive selling agent to handle certain specified grades of paper. The answers deny, however, that the contracts between the General Paper Company and the manufacturing corporations ever conferred upon the former the power to control or restrict the output, or to fix the prices, conditions of sale or other manner of disposition of the paper sold under such contracts. On the contrary, it is answered that the General Paper Company is and has been under the duty merely of keeping the manufacturing defendants supplied with orders, at the best prices reasonably obtainable, and to submit all orders so obtained for the approval or rejection of the mill by which they were to be filled; and it is specifically denied that the defendants have ever entered into any agreement, combination or conspiracy to restrain trade and commerce, as charged in the petition. Fifth, it is admitted that the General Paper Company receives a fixed percentage upon all sales of paper, for its services, and that the profits of the business of the General Paper Company, after paying expenses, are divided among the stockholders in proportion to their holdings. As soon as the cause was at issue, a special examiner was appointed by the United States Circuit Court for the District of Minnesota, with authority to take testimony both within and without the District. Hearings before the examiner were duly begun at Milwaukee, ..
