The strengths and abilities children develop from infancy through adolescence are crucial for their physical, emotional, and cognitive growth, which in turn help them to achieve success in school and to become responsible, economically self-sufficient, and healthy adults. Capable, responsible, and healthy adults are clearly the foundation of a well-functioning and prosperous society, yet America's future is not as secure as it could be because millions of American children live in families with incomes below the poverty line. A wealth of evidence suggests that a lack of adequate economic resources for families with children compromises these children's ability to grow and achieve adult success, hurting them and the broader society. A Roadmap to Reducing Child Poverty reviews the research on linkages between child poverty and child well-being, and analyzes the poverty-reducing effects of major assistance programs directed at children and families. This report also provides policy and program recommendations for reducing the number of children living in poverty in the United States by half within 10 years.

As the culminating volume in the DCP3 series, volume 9 will provide an overview of DCP3 findings and methods, a summary of messages and substantive lessons to be taken from DCP3, and a further discussion of cross-cutting and synthesizing topics across the first eight volumes. The introductory chapters (1-3) in this volume take as their starting point the elements of the Essential Packages presented in the overview chapters of each volume. First, the chapter on intersectoral policy priorities for health includes fiscal and intersectoral policies and assembles a subset of the population policies and applies strict criteria for a low-income setting in order to propose a "highest-priority" essential package. Second, the chapter on packages of care and delivery platforms for universal health coverage (UHC) includes health sector interventions, primarily clinical and public health services, and uses the same approach to propose a highest priority package of interventions and policies that meet similar criteria, provides cost estimates, and describes a pathway to UHC.

Although the absolute number of poor people in the world has declined significantly in recent decades, poverty reduction continues to be a very important issue. There still are very large numbers of poor people, relative poverty is an increasingly concerning problem, and progress on poverty reduction varies enormously from one part of the world to another. Factors contributing to poverty reduction include economic growth, economic integration, and specific poverty-reduction programs, which are often initiated by Western countries. This book considers poverty reduction from a global perspective. Development and Poverty Reduction looks at a wide range of specific subjects, across all continents. It highlights in particular how the issues are perceived from a non-Western perspective and especially how the rise of China is both having a profound impact on poverty reduction globally and also changing the overall way in which development and poverty reduction are approached. * Draws attention to the global nature of poverty and its link to conflict * Looks at poverty as a universal problelm, focusing on all nations both rich and poor * Multidisciplinary and wide-ranging, targeted for a broad audience, including NGOs, community and citizen based advocacy groups, students in international development programs and practitioners. Poverty and peace, and the relationships between them, are the central challenges for our times. Arguing that reducing poverty is not only possible, but can also build opportunities for peace, Coralie Bryant and Christina Kappaz help form the policy debate on the role of poverty reduction in international society. Oftentimes poverty is looked at only in specific countries, or is focused on developing countries. Reducing Poverty, Building Peace looks at poverty from both sides of the spectrum: domestic and global, rich and poor countries. The second half of the book focuses on what has been learned about effectiveness, especially through participatory development, and more commitment to implementation in order to gain results. This book combines a discussion of theoretical concepts with attention to policies, programs, and projects and the ways they might be designed and implemented to reduce poverty. Since there has been progress in reducing poverty, the challenge now is to learn from this experience about what works and to build political will to achieve this possible goal.
