We Christians live in a rushed and hurried culture which our churches have accepted without thinking through the consequences. It seems that we have allowed ourselves to equate busyness with spirituality and bible study with the loudest opinion in the room. Reflecting attempts to call us back to a matured time in Christian history when congregants did not read the Bible speedily. One of my high school English teachers used to warn us that just vocalizing words aloud was different than truly reading. This book calls us to read the Scripture, reread the Scripture, think about what we have read, and to meditate on the concepts of a passage following them throughout Scripture. By this means, we should be able to grasp a more complete understanding of the ideas the verses have presented to us. Moreover, a slower reading and a rereading allows time for the Holy Spirit to speak to us. Often I hear someone express that as often as they have read a certain passage of Scripture, they did not gain the newest understanding from their latest reading. Why is that? It is because we have just called words without reflecting on them. Reflecting and meditating are old ways of studying the Word of God. You will be richly blessed by beginning and maintaining the practice. It is indeed food for the hungry Christian's soul.

None of us is guaranteed to live through tomorrow, and there is no secret knowledge on things we can or might do or avoid to make our lives easier or have purpose. Many people in our society who search for meaning in life and find none turn to drugs, alcohol, materialism, or power. Moreover, Islam is growing in popularity among the young and poor of the world, with many turning to the violent side of Islam. Our society and nation is experiencing moral decay with no easy solutions. Those who choose to follow Christ are seeing the beginning of persecution, as society is trying to silence any knowledge of Jesus. In this book there are several passages from Scripture, along with commentary on each, that we should consider and act upon, as they deal with many of the basic issues of life that we all must face as we go forward in life.

The concept of My One Word is simple. Lose the long list of resolutions—all your sweeping promises to change—and do something about one thing this year instead of nothing about everything. Choose just one word that represents what you most hope God will do in you, and focus on it for an entire year. This single act will force clarity and concentrate your efforts. As you focus on your word over an extended period of time, you position yourself for God to form your character at a deep, sustainable level. Growth and change will result. Author Mike Ashcraft, who has led his megachurch through this My One Word project for more than five years, and Proverbs 31 Ministries author and speaker Rachel Olsen, who has lived it, are encouraging, insightful, good-humored, yet realistic in this enjoyable read. Their stories of growth and change through My One Word will keep you motivated. Throughout the book you'll also find words and stories of people just like you who have joined the My One Word movement and discovered the power of just one word. Includes discussion questions for use with the small-group video curriculum, My One Word: A DVD Study (sold separately).

It is a devils lie that words dont hurt. One word can carry such tremendous weight and such deep meaning. Look with me at some ordinary words, and some not so ordinary words. Bare your heart honestly before self and before God. See if you identify with any of my struggles. Share with me what has been a fruit of reflecting on His Word and not just mine. I know that I am not alone on this journey of faith. You are on your own journey. Let us reflect on His good Word. It is safe to trust Him enough to be honest with ourselves before Him. He is so good.
