Regional Follow Up To The World Summit On Sustainable Development In Asia And The Pacific

The World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg in September 2002, highlighted the fact that global sustainable development was critically dependent upon achieving sustainable development in the Asia and the Pacific region, to be pursued at both regional and subregional levels. This publication considers a number of policy initiatives and priorities to support these goals for environmental and sustainable development in the five subregions of Central Asia, North-East Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia and the South Pacific. Subregional initiatives suggested relate to: integrated water resources management; transboundary air pollution, including abatement of dust storm; desertification and land degradation; poverty reduction and food security; natural disaster mitigation; urban development; the impact of globalisation; protection and management of coastal and marine ecosystems.

The book explains three basic principles of Greening growth: quality of economic growth, eco-efficiency of economic growth, and environmental sustainability vis-á-vis environmental performance; and four pillars of Green growth: eco-tax reform, sustainable infrastructure, the greening of business and sustainable consumption. It explores them as potential for policy options and approaches for sustainable development and improved welfare, and gives fresh and practical perspectives from regional governments and experts.

The establishment of good governance is a major challenge for the developing world, along with the need to sustain the progress resulting from developmental efforts. Although there are numerous studies on the development and governance of emerging nations, few volumes make a serious effort to bring together these two critical concepts. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002 brought together thousands of delegates who mapped out the future of the global sustainable development agenda. The resulting technical document, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI), identifies priorities in the implementation of Agenda 21 and other international agreements, and commitments that will take these priorities forward. This plain language version provides an invaluable reference to the outcomes of the WSSD by explaining the JPOI clearly for the lay person and expert alike.

Events like the Bhopal disaster, the sale of products harmful to human health and safety, and child labour, especially in resource-scarce settings, raise fundamental issues of human dignity and ecological integrity. From a legal perspective, and in the context of Foreign Direct Investment by Transnational Corporations in developing countries, they highlight the lacuna of a holistic international legal framework and its implementation.
