Contemporary Jewish art is a growing field that includes traditional as well as new creative practices, yet criticism of it is almost exclusively reliant on the Second Commandment’s prohibition of graven images. Arguing that this disregards the corpus of Jewish thought and a century of criticism and interpretation, Ben Schachter advocates instead a new approach focused on action and process. Departing from the traditional interpretation of the Second Commandment, Schachter addresses abstraction, conceptual art, performance art, and other styles that do not rely on imagery for meaning. He examines Jewish art through the concept of melachot—work-like “creative activities” as defined by the medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides. Showing the similarity between art and melachot in the active processes of contemporary Jewish artists such as Ruth Weisberg, Allan Wexler, Archie Rand, and Nechama Golan, he explores the relationship between these artists’ methods and Judaism’s demanding attention to procedure. A compellingly written challenge to traditionalism, Image, Action, and Idea in Contemporary Jewish Art makes a well-argued case for artistic production, interpretation, and criticism that revels in the dual foundation of Judaism and art history.

Stimulus Books are volumes co-sponsored by the Stimulus Foundation and Paulist Press that deal with topics of vital interest to the Jewish-Christian dialogue. This latest Stimulus Book, A Story of Shalom is, in the words of the author, an "experiment". In it he takes the dawn of the millennium as an opportunity to retell the Christian story (the origins of the church, its purposes, its doings over the centuries and its goals for the future) in a way that envisions a positive relationship between the Christian and Jewish peoples. He rejects the "old" story of creation as "supersessionist", (believing that Christianity has replaced Judaism as God's chosen people). And he tells the Christian story in a way that promotes "Shalom" by affirming Judaism's covenant with God and the validity of Jewish self-understanding.

This book develops a new philosophy of Israel education. “Person-centered” Israel education is concerned with developing in individual learners the ability to understand and make rational, emotional, and ethical decisions about Israel, and about the challenges Israel regularly faces, whether they be existential, spiritual, democratic, humanitarian, national, etc. Chazan begins by laying out the terms of the conversation then examines the six-pronged theory of “person-centered” Israel education to outline the aims, content, pedagogy, and educators needed to implement this program. Finally, the author meditates on what a transformation from ethnic to ethical education might look like in this context and others. This book is Open Access under a CC-BY license.
