This book reflects on the significance of duties in creating an egalitarian society by collating and contextualizing the relevant literature. It particularly focuses on an appreciation of Gandhi’s views on duty to showcase how they remain pertinent to create a cohesive, responsible and value-based society in the present right-dominated world. A viable solution to the current real world problems could be found in exploring the philosophy on duties and the book provides relevant literature in this regard. It undertakes jurisprudential analysis of duty in a rights-dominated world, identifying the gaps in realising the potential of duty to address the critical issues of the present times. It argues that enforcement of rights depends heavily on the observance of duties and proposes coherence in right-duty relationship. Gandhian thought on duty recognises duty as a precursor to rights and emphasises that the observance of duties guarantees the enforcement of rights. The relevance of duties and Gandhian thoughts on the same is not restricted to India but transcends borders with profound appeal. Gandhian thoughts have become even more relevant in the current times to examine the situation of COVID-19 pandemic, racial discrimination (BLM), environmental crises, digital divide, health care and medical care crises, refugee and migrant labour problems and it can offer promising solutions based on the nuances of social solidarity, self realisation of duties/responsibilities, local governance, compassion and humanity.

International Human Rights examines the ways in which states and other international actors have addressed human rights since the end of World War II. This unique textbook features substantial attention to theory, history, international and regional institutions, and the role of transnational actors in the protection and promotion of human rights. Its purpose is to explore the difficult and contentious politics of human rights, and how those political dimensions have been addressed at the national, regional, and especially international levels. The fifth edition is substantially revised throughout, including updates on multilateral institutions, particularly the UN's Universal Periodic Review process; regional systems; human rights in foreign policy (including a chapter on U.S. policy); humanitarian intervention; globalization; and (anti)terrorism and human rights. The book also includes a new chapter on the unity of human rights, and new case studies exploring the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Procedures mechanisms, Myanmar, and Israeli settlements in West-Bank Palestine. Chapters include discussion questions, case studies for in-depth examination of topics, and ten "problems" tailored to promote classroom discussion on topics such as the war in Syria, hierarchies between human rights, and much more.

Disturbing Conventions draws the study of Thai literature out of the relative isolation that has to date impeded its participation in the wider field of comparative and world literature. Predominantly penned by Thai academics, the collection decentres Thai literary studies in order to move beyond the traditionalist, conservative concerns of the academy which have, until relatively recently, foreclosed the use of “Western” theory in the study of Thai literature. The book introduces new frames of analysis to the study of Thai literature to bring it into dialogue with debates in wider fields and the world beyond its national borders. As a result, Disturbing Conventions offers an essential contribution to the comparative study of world literature and Asian cultural studies.

The emergence of a global community is accompanied by a realization that greater cooperation is essential to its welfare. This is particularly true in the area of crime prevention and control. The increase in international, transnational, transboundary and national crime has contributed to a genuine growth in the body of international criminal law. The most effective way to combat such crimes is for states to accept an obligation to try international criminal law offenders before their own courts or surrender them for trial before the courts of another state or an international court. Until such time as an effective system of international criminal justice is established, the duty to prosecute or extradite will remain the foundation for international criminal law enforcement. This book examines in detail the variety of international instruments which impose a duty to prosecute or to extradite. It asks how far this duty goes and whether one aspect of this obligation supersedes the other, and whether it can now be regarded as an obligation imposed by general international law. In discussing these questions, the book provides a highly illuminating account of the basic postulates of international criminal law and their relationship to competing visions of the nature of the international legal order. There is an evident need for international law to settle some of these questions. The ICJ, for example, needs to address the question in the case brought before it by Libya against the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Moreover, it will be a question of some significance with respect to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Lastly, the prospect of a permanent international criminal court presently before the United Nations, is, in part, dependent on the effectiveness of aut dedere aut judicare. The two authors who address these difficult questions have contributed to the advancement of international law in general, and international criminal law in particular. They have produced a book which is a balanced blend of scholarly research and legal analysis.
