Excerpt from The Religious System of China, Vol. 3: Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect Manners, Customs and Social Institutions Connected Therewith; Book I., Disposal of the Dead, Part III, the Grave (Second Half) The simple conclusion is, that family graves must have been of common prevalence in the ancient Chinese Empire. The custom of living together in clans, each composed of the descendants of one family, greatly favoured this state of things, naturally turning the burial ground of each settlement or village into one large family grave-yard. Excerpt from The Religion of the Chinese A place as a world-religion must, without hesi tation, be assigned to it on account of the vast number of its adherents. It has extended the circle of its influence far beyond the boundaries of the empire proper, and has gained access, together with Chinese culture generally, into Korea, Japan, Manchuria, and Turkestan, as well as into Indo China, though, of course, in modified forms. Hence a proper understanding of the religions of East Asia in general requires in the first place an under standing of the religion of China. Excerpt from Religions of Ancient China The problem of the universe has never offered the slightest difficulty to Chinese philosophers. Before the beginning of all things, there was Nothing. In the lapse of ages Nothing coalesced into Unity, the Great Monad. After more ages, the Great Monad separated into Duality, the Male and Female Principles in nature; and then, by a process of biogenesis, the visible universe was produced. An addition, however, to this simple system had to be made, in deference to, and on a plane with, the intelligence of the masses. According to this, the Male and Female Principles were each subdivided into Greater and Lesser, and then from the interaction of these four agencies a being, named P'an Ku, came into existence.
