Ireland in Focus is the first book to address the diverse range of visual representations of national and communal identity in Ireland. The fear and fascination surrounding burglary were mobilized by media, state, and market to sell insurance and security technologies, whilst also popularising the crime in fiction, theatre, and film. Cat burglars' rooftop adventures transformed ideas about the architecture and policing of the city, and post-war 'spy-burglars' theft of information illuminated Cold War skirmishes across the capital. More than any other crime, burglary shaped the everyday rhythms, purchases, and perceptions of modern urban life.

Relocating England considers the implications of the rise of the European Union for the ways in which people in the UK think of themselves as political actors. The book considers whether the elite ideas of 'Britain/Britishness' might be breaking down, thereby opening up the possibility of a broadly based re-animation of the ideas of 'England/Englishness'. Such a political-cultural project would imply great changes within the UK: democratisation, Europeanisation and modernisation. It is a threat to the elite, but it is an opportunity for the 'ordinary English'. The book follows in the footsteps of those scholars who have criticised the conservatism of the UK political establishment, their obsession with the 'special relationship with the USA' and their blithe disregard of the benefits of the mainland model of progressive social market democracy.

Material things mattered immensely to those who engaged in daily struggles over the character and future of slavery and to those who subsequently contested the meanings of freedom in the post-emancipation Caribbean. Throughout the history of slavery, objects and places were significant to different groups of people, from the opulent master class to enslaved field hands as well as to other groups, including maroons, free people of colour and missionaries, all of who shared the lived environments of Caribbean plantation colonies.
