The biennial meetings at São Carlos have helped create a worldwide community of experts and young researchers working on singularity theory, with a special focus on applications to topics in both pure and applied mathematics. This volume brings together surveys and recent work from the tenth São Carlos meeting.

This book focuses on the interactions between discrete and geometric dynamical systems, and between dynamical systems and theoretical physics and computer science. Accordingly, the contributions revolve around two main topics: (1) interaction between geometric and symbolic systems, with emphasis on tiling problems for quasicrystals, substitutions and their multidimensional generalizations, geodesic and horocycle flow, adic systems; (2) dynamical systems: geometry and chaos, with special interest in smooth ergodic theory, statistical and multifractal properties of chaotic systems, stability and turbulence in extended complex systems. Geometric Mechanics here means mechanics on a pseudo-riemannian manifold and the main goal is the study of some mechanical models and concepts, with emphasis on the intrinsic and geometric aspects arising in classical problems. The first seven chapters are written in the spirit of Newtonian Mechanics while the last two ones as well as two of the four appendices describe the foundations and some aspects of Special and General Relativity. All the material has a coordinate free presentation but, for the sake of motivation, many examples and exercises are included in order to exhibit the desirable flavor of physical applications.

The Latin-American conference on algebra, the XV Coloquio Latinoamericano de Algebra (Cocoyoc, Mexico), consisted of plenary sessions of general interest and special sessions on algebraic combinatorics, associative rings, cohomology of rings and algebras, commutative algebra, group representations, Hopf algebras, number theory, quantum groups, and representation theory of algebras. This proceedings volume contains original research papers related to talks at the colloquium. In addition, there are several surveys presenting important topics to a broad mathematical audience. There are also two invited papers by Raymundo Bautista and Roberto Martinez, founders of the Mexican school of representation theory of algebras. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in algebra.

This title contains results in active research areas in the theory of groups, group rings and algebras (including noncommutative rings), polynomial identities, Lie algebras and superalgebras.

Originating with the pioneering works of P. Fatou and G. Julia, the subject of complex dynamics has seen great advances in recent years. Complex dynamical systems often exhibit rich, chaotic behavior, which yields attractive computer generated pictures, for example the Mandelbrot and Julia sets, which have done much to renew interest in the subject. This self-contained book discusses the major mathematical tools necessary for the study of complex dynamics at an advanced level. Complete proofs of some of the major tools are presented; some, such as the Bers-Royden theorem on holomorphic motions, appear for the very first time in book format.
