This book includes the proceedings of the Responsible Engineering and Living 2022 Symposium and Industry Summit. Molière holds each of us accountable when he asserted that, “It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do.” Responsible Engineering and Living 2022 (REAL2022) strived to inspire every individual to practise and foster responsible engineering and living. Its proceedings brings all stakeholders, enthusiasts and experts from academia, industry, policy arenas, and general public, together to discuss challenges, sharpen existing solutions, and formulate novel means to advance responsible engineering and living. This symposium disseminates recent progress and promote collaborations to maximize opportunities for innovative solutions. Technology and Ethics. A European Quest for Responsible Engineering, edited by B. Heriard Dubreuil and his team (University Lille) is in many regards an innovative publication. It is the first fully European contribution to the field of engineering ethics and the result of an intensive cooperation between ethicists and engineers from all the member countries of the European Union. The basic structure of the book is both the distinction and interaction between three levels of analysis: personal responsibility of engineers, the institutional level (business organisations) and the impact of technology on society and culture. On the personal level, the book deals with problems such as the role of professional codes and the fact that engineers must cope with flexibility, shorter lines of decision and erosion of the boundaries between private and professional life. On the meso level, the book deals with different aspects of decision making in the context of business organizations, such as quality management, technology assessment procedures, business ethics committees etc... On the macro level, the authors focus on the power of technology. Together with the influences from other social, economic and political actors, the decisions of engineers change the world in a way which is of moral significance.

Engineering Flesh. Towards professional responsibility for ‘lived bodies’ in Tissue Engineering This study analyses the work of biomedical engineers as normative work that affects people’s daily lives as bodies. In biomedical engineering, engineers study bodies as machine-like objects and develop technologies from such a perspective. However, in daily life patients live their bodies not as machine-like but as themselves. Biomedical engineering can be said to involve normative work because it affects the way people experience and live their bodies. For example, imaging technologies used to follow the development of a foetus during pregnancy stimulate the perception of the foetus as an individual human being and change the related conceptions of good professional care and responsible parenthood. In this light, I raise the question as to how biomedical engineers can take and shape professional responsibility for this kind of normative work with respect to bodies. To study normative work in biomedical engineering, I have analysed the practice of tissue engineering (TE). In this practice, engineers rather literally make human body parts: TE has as objective to create living body part substitutes (e.g. skin, heart valves and bladders) by using cells. In the tradition of Science and Technology Studies (STS) I have studied normative work in TE empirically by following a specific TE project: namely, a TE heart valve project through participant observations, interviews and other fieldwork approaches. To be able to analyse how the practice of TE affects lived bodies I draw on work in the philosophical tradition of phenomenology. This tradition has as central concept ‘the lived body’ rather than the body as object. In this book I show how TE implies normative work for engineers: in the presentation of their work in terms of ‘mimicking nature’; in making standards for TE heart valves; and in developing networks to stimulate the further development of TE and to enable the impleme

Let us learn from a living cell that utilizes inherited biological intelligence to organize its resources for current needs and future existence. We also have the responsibility to ensure universal access to electricity and increase the share of renewable energies. Cost effective hybrid renewable energy systems should also be considered and furthered. Advancing energy storage is a necessary striving for managing a future "toilet paper crisis." More accurate accounting of weather is crucial in furthering energy efficiency for human thermal comfort. With cooling making up the highest energy cost in many medical structures, combining low-energy building strategies with source-efficient and low-cost manufacturing envelopes can contribute effectively to mitigating climate change. To realize calculated improvements in practice, we must assess the performance after implementation of the promising measures. Construction is definitely the right place to start incorporating sustainable development and living. Another means to promote sustainability is to improve engineering system performance. Simple means such as a rightly positioned cylindrical rod can enhance systems that involve heat exchangers. An important lesson came through dealing with COVID-19, teaching us to provide adaptation strategies through water-energy-food nexus planning, building resilient communities for tomorrow.
