Responsive Architecture

Twenty-five years ago, Curtis Moody founded his architectural practice in an improvised office inside an old house in Columbus, Ohio, where a bathtub served as an ad-hoc drawings cabinet. As word spread of his outsized talent, Moody attracted a growing number of impressive clients and projects. Howard E. Nolan joined Moody in 1984, and newly formed Moody Nolan flourished. Today, Moody Nolan has become one of the fastest-growing architectural firms in the nation. Responsive Architecture presents the finest examples of Moody Nolan's recent work. The selection of photographs and technical drawings makes clear the firm's guiding design principles. Author Morris Newman explores the firm's consistent design ethos, centered on humane values and the notion ofresponsive architecture as a mode of inquiry. This book is a collection of articles that have been published in the Special Issue “Responsive Architecture” of the MDPI journal Buildings. The eleven articles within cover various areas of sensitive architecture, including the design of packaging structures reacting to supporting components; structural efficiency of bent columns in indigenous houses; roof forms responsive to buildings depending on their resiliently transformed steel shell parts; creative design of building free shapes covered with transformed shells; artistic structural concepts of the architect and civil engineer; digitally designed airport terminal using wind analysis; rationalized shaping of sensitive curvilinear steel construction; interactive stories of responsive architecture; transformed shell roof constructions as the main determinant in the creative shaping of buildings without shapes that are sensitive to man-made and natural environments; thermally sensitive performances of a special shielding envelope on balconies; quantification of generality and adaptability of building layout using the SAGA method; and influence of initial conditions on the simulation of the transient temperature field inside a wall.

The Hylozoic Soil experimental architecture series developed by architect Philip Beesley and engineer Rob Gorbet has been expanded and refined by researchers, engineers and designe rs from around the world. An interactive geotextile mesh that senses human occupants, Hylozoic Soil transforms a static building into a responsive environment, filling it with a kind of mechanical empathy. The space functions like a giant lung that breathes in and out around its occupants in peristaltic waves of lightweight pores. With contributions by:Will Elsworthy, Rob Gorbet, Jonah Humphrey, Hayley Isaacs, and Christian Joakim. Project selected as Canada's Venice Biennale entry for 2010.

The sensing, processing, and visualizing that are currently in development within the environment boldly change the ways design and maintenance of landscapes are perceived and conceptualised. This is the first book to rationalize interactive architecture and responsive technologies through the lens of contemporary landscape architectural theory. Responsive Landscapes frames a comprehensive view of design projects using responsive technologies and their relationship to landscape and environmental space. This edited book gathers research studies presented at the 5th International Symposium on Formal Methods in Architecture (5FMA), Lisbon 2020. Studies focus on the use of methodologies, especially those that have witnessed recent developments, that stem from the mathematical and computer sciences and are developed in a collaborative way with architecture and related fields. Climate Responsive Design provides a unique source for students and practising architects requiring guidance on climatic design. Covering theory and application it provides examples of innovative and best practice in 'responsive architecture' through case studies. The book also covers the broader topic of technology as a generator in design which will be of interest to all those involved in design and building. The book focuses on tropical climate but some of the theory can be applied to other climates; the difference in application is clearly delineated.
