An approach that encompasses the human and natural dimensions of ecosystems is one that the Wider Caribbean Region knows it must adopt and implement, in order to ensure the sustainable use of the region's shared marine resources. This volume contributes towards that vision, bringing together the collective knowledge and experience of scholars and practitioners within the Wider Caribbean to begin the process of assembling a road map towards marine ecosystem based management (EBM) for the region. It also serves a broader purpose of providing stakeholders and policy actors in each of the world's sixty-four Large Marine Ecosystems, with a comparative example of the challenges and information needs required to implement principled ocean governance generally and marine EBM in particular, at multiple levels. Additionally, the volume serves to supplement the training of graduate level students in the marine sciences by enhancing interdisciplinary understanding of challenges in implementing marine EBM.

Fisheries management is the process that has evolved to try to ensure that fisheries operate in a manner that provides the immediate benefits in a sustainable manner. The widely accepted goal is that the full range of benefits should not only be available for this generation but for generations to come. Fisheries management has been successful in some cases but there have also been many, many cases of failure. Following the Introduction: Part I examines the primary dimensions of fisheries: biological, ecological, social and economic Part II looks at the legal and institutional characteristics of fisheries Part III explores the tools that fishery managers have to achieve the objectives expected from a fishery Part IV discusses the role of scientific information of indicators and reference points Part V moves into implementation of fisheries management and includes a chapter on special considerations in small-scale fisheries This landmark publication is aimed at fishery managers and scientists. All libraries in research establishments and universities where fisheries and aquatic sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this important volume. Fisheries around the world make essential contributions to human well-being including the provision of basic food supplies, employment, recreational opportunities, foreign currency and others, providing benefits to hundreds of millions of people. Despite these benefits, our record of managing fisheries so that the benefits can be sustained has been poor, at best, and most fisheries around the world are experiencing serious ecological, social or economic problems and usually all three. Today there is global concern about the state of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems, their resilience to future stresses such as climate change and their ability to continue to provide benefits.

The application of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in the Mediterranean and Black Sea faces several challenges also because of large ecological, economic, political and institutional differences across the basin. The challenge of CFP application is exacerbated by the legal/administrative situation, with large areas outside national/EU jurisdictions, by the different development of fisheries that result in fleet capacities highly different on opposite shores of some sub-basins, as well as by uneven monitoring and data availability across the basins that result in situations that hamper sustainable management. This book collates analyses related to the application of the principles included in the CFP in Mediterranean and Black Sea, including assessments of current status, scenario analyses, visions of best solutions, evaluation of critical hot spots and effects of regionalization of fisheries management. The eBook tackles from local to transboundary issues and solutions and provides a broad vision of problems together with important practical solutions for CFP application in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

The meeting included a range of views regarding the risks and challenges inherent to the recent developments in international seafood trade with views from government officials, business representatives and academia. The symposium highlighted that the seafood sector is extremely dynamic and is increasingly becoming a global sector. Risks include the pressure of global demand on capture fisheries that are often overexploited, meeting the higher sanitary and phytosanitary requirements being set by the markets and the development of voluntary ecolabels. Opportunities include better management of marine resources, further development of the aquaculture sector, advancement of technology to meet sanitary and phytosanitary requirements and enhancement of the value-added sector in developing countries. "This document has been developed to provide information and guidance on the use of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the context of fisheries. As MPA implementation moves ahead in the arena of marine biodiversity conservation, many people feel that the fisheries aspects are not fully understood nor always appropriately taken into account, and that guidance specific to this sector is needed. These Guidelines look specifically at fisheries features of MPAs, but also address the interface between fisheries management and biodiversity conservation and provide support for MPAs with multiple objectives. The Guidelines are divided into two sections: the first discusses definitions and context, and provides background information on fisheries management, the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) and MPAs as a tool for fisheries management, including socio-economic and biological impacts. The second section considers the planning and implementing of MPAs including the institutional, legal and policy context, the planning process and actual implementation considerations. Conclusions and future directions are offered in the last chapter of this section, while a selection of annexes offers in-depth information on a few key issues. The document highlights the need for increased coordination across sectors and agencies/departments. Integration of diverse interests and viewpoints is required if we are to successfully manage our oceans and their resources for future generations.
