Review Of The State Of World Aquaculture

This document is the second review of the Fisheries Circular 886 - Review of the State of World Aquaculture. Taking into consideration various reviews and analyses of aquaculture production, development and management published by FAO over the past few years, the format of the present revision of the Circular deviates slightly from the previous format. It includes a global review of aquaculture production and production trends, brief regional production profiles based on national aquaculture statistics received from FAO member countries up to 2000, an outlook for aquaculture development (major issues, opportunities and challenges), and a section discussing issues of current importance to global aquaculture development and management. The latter include inland fisheries and aquaculture: a synergy for sustainable food fish production, the role of aquaculture in rural development, recent technological innovations in aquaculture, and producer association and farmer societies' contribution to aquaculture development. Future revisions will address more issues of interest for sustainable development and management of aquaculture, where appropriate.

The 2018 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture emphasizes the sector’s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and measurement of progress towards these goals. It notes the particular contributions of inland and small-scale fisheries, and highlights the importance of rights-based governance for equitable and inclusive development. As in past editions, the publication begins with a global analysis of trends in fisheries and aquaculture production, stocks, processing and use, trade and consumption, based on the latest official statistics, along with a review of the status of the world’s fishing fleets and human engagement and governance in the sector. Topics explored in Parts 2 to 4 include aquatic biodiversity; the ecosystem approach to fisheries and to aquaculture; climate change impacts and responses; the sector’s contribution to food security and human nutrition; and issues related to international trade, consumer protection and sustainable value chains. Global developments in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, selected ocean pollution concerns and FAO’s efforts to improve capture fishery data are also discussed. The issue concludes with the outlook for the sector, including projections to 2030. As always, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to- date information to a wide audience, including policy-makers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed all those interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Risk management is increasingly gaining attention within the aquaculture sector, as reflected in the development and increasing implementation of better management practices, codes of conduct and codes of good practice, standard operational procedures, certification and traceability. Aquaculture insurance is one of the tools used in the management of risks in aquaculture. This publication provides an overview of the current status of aquaculture stock insurance in the world. Seven syntheses covering Asia, China, Europe, North America, Oceania, South America and sub-Saharan Africa show the specificities of the situation with regard to aquaculture stock insurance. The publication also presents a summary of these syntheses, together with conclusions and clear recommendations at various levels to increase the contribution of aquaculture stock insurance to the sustainable management and development of the aquaculture sector.

Aquaculture is developing, expanding and intensifying in almost all regions of the world, except in sub-Saharan Africa. Although the sector appears to be capable of meeting the gap between future demand and supply for aquatic food, there are many constraints and challenges which must be addressed in order to at least maintain the present level of per capita consumption at the global level. Key issues are the need for enhanced enforcement of regulation and better governance of the sector, as well as greater producer participation in the decision-making and regulation process. This publication examines past trends in aquaculture development as well as the current global status, drawing on a number of national and regional reviews.

This publication updates the regular reviews of the state of the world's marine fishery resources, based mainly on official catch statistics throughout 2002 and relevant stock assessment and other complementary information available until 2004. It considers the global situation and major trends of world marine capture fish production, with detailed information for each FAO statistical area about catches and current state of exploitation, major trends and developments and stock assessment work undertaken in support of fisheries management. Other issues covered include: tunas and tuna-like species resources, world squid resources, deepwater fisheries, and long-term climate variability.

"The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture" presents a world review of fisheries and aquaculture, including trends and statistics. It highlights issues debated worldwide and profiles future scenarios with a view to providing the most current global view and perspective on fisheries and aquaculture. This issue features some aspects of fisheries and aquaculture that may receive increasing attention. These include climate change, the use of marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction, and the proliferation of private standards and certification schemes in the international fish trade. This report also highlights some of FAO's special studies. Among these are the use of wild-fishery resources as seed and feed in aquaculture, and reviews of the world's shrimp fisheries and of the management of marine capture fisheries in the Pacific Ocean. The report is accompanied by the latest edition of the FAO World Fisheries and Aquaculture Atlas CD-ROM, a comprehensive and global view of marine and inland capture fisheries and aquaculture. A useful resource for policy makers, economists, environmentalists, researchers and students, and fish trade and industry managers. Also published in Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Spanish.

In recent years, the demand for reliable data and reporting on aquaculture has greatly increased, driven not only by the need to formulate and monitor sound policies and development plans, but also by the reporting requirements of international agreements and by increasing public demand for transparency and accountability. This document sets out the findings of a FAO expert consultation, held in January 2004, to discuss relevant issues including approval of a draft strategy and outline plan for improving information on status and trends of aquaculture.
