This is the third volume in the Reviews in Fluorescence series. To date, two volumes have been both published and well received by the scientific community. Several book reviews have also favorably described the series as an "excellent compilation of material which is well balanced from authors in both the US and Europe". Of particular mention we note the recent book review in JACS by Gary Baker, Los Alamos. In this 3rd volume we continue the tradition of publishing leading edge and timely articles from authors around the world. We hope you find this volume as useful as past volumes, which promises to be just as diverse with regard to content. Finally, in closing, we would like to thank Dr Kadir Asian for the typesetting of the entire volume and our counterparts at Springer, New York, for its timely publication. Professor Chris D. Geddes Professor Joseph R. Lakowicz August 20*^ 2005.

FRET – Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Meeting the need for an up-to-date and detailed primer on all aspects of the topic, this ready reference reflects the incredible expansion in the application of FRET and its derivative techniques over the past decade, especially in the biological sciences. This wide diversity is equally mirrored in the range of expert contributors. The book itself is clearly subdivided into four major sections. The first provides some background, theory, and key concepts, while the second section focuses on some common FRET techniques and applications, such as in vitro sensing and diagnostics, the determination of protein, peptide and other biological structures, as well as cellular biosensing with genetically encoded fluorescent indicators. The third section looks at recent developments, beginning with the use of fluorescent proteins, followed by a review of FRET usage with semiconductor quantum dots, along with an overview of multistep FRET. The text concludes with a detailed and greatly updated series of supporting tables on FRET pairs and Förster distances, together with some outlook and perspectives on FRET. Written for both the FRET novice and for the seasoned user, this is a must-have resource for office and laboratory shelves.

From the Lab to Clinical Settings—Advances in Quantitative, Noninvasive Optical Diagnostics Noninvasive fluorescence imaging techniques, novel fluorescent labels, and natural biomarkers are revolutionizing our knowledge of cellular processes, signaling and metabolic pathways, the underlying mechanisms for health problems, and the identification of new therapeutic targets for drug discoveries. Natural Biomarkers for Cellular Metabolism: Biology, Techniques, and Applications delves into the current state of knowledge on intrinsic fluorescent biomarkers and highlights recent developments in using these biomarkers for the metabolic mapping and clinical diagnosis of healthy and diseased cells and tissues. Autofluorescent Biomarkers for Biomedical Diagnostics The book’s first section introduces the fundamentals of cellular energy metabolism as well as natural biomarkers within the context of their biological functions. The second section outlines the theoretical and technical background of quantitative, noninvasive, autofluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy methods, including experimental design, calibration, pitfalls, and remedies of data acquisition and analysis. The last two sections highlight advances in biomedical and biochemical applications, such as monitoring stem cell differentiation in engineered tissues and diagnosing cancer and ophthalmic diseases quantitatively and noninvasively. Tailored to Interdisciplinary Researchers Covering cell biology, imaging techniques, and clinical diagnostics, this book provides readers with a complete guide to studying cellular/tissue metabolism under healthy, diseased, and environment-induced stress conditions using natural biomarkers. The book is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, biophysics instructors, medical researchers, and those in pharmaceutical R&D.
