Rising Concentration In Asia Latin American Value Chains

Dynamic Asia has overtaken the European Union as Latin America and the Caribbean's second largest export market, after the United States. However, the region's exports to Asia remain concentrated in few commodities involved a small number of large firms. This book explores the present and future scope for the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in biregional trade and value chains and the measures that can be taken to make those chains more inclusive and sustainable. It encourages governments in Latin America to improve the business environment in order to encourage multinational firms to invest, upgrade and innovate in the region.

This report reviews international and regional developments from a trade perspective, describing the principal global economic trends and structural changes in international trade, the main areas of trade growth and the changes these drive in the region. With external conditions sluggish and highly uncertain as the global economy still struggles to shake off the effects of the economic crisis of 2008-2009, the Latin American and Caribbean region is not isolated from these effects and is projected to record a small drop in gross domestic product in 2015, followed by a weak recovery in 2016. This edition of the Latin America and the Caribbean in the World Economy examines how this third consecutive year of increasing declines in regional export values affects the region.

This second edition explores and accounts for the many changes in the emerging markets of China and the Latin American countries since 2011. The report explores policy actions to improve social protection mechanisms and increase social inclusion, foster regional integration and strengthen industrial strategies, and rethink the social contract to restore trust and empower citizens at all stages of the policy‐making process.

The Demographic Observatory 2014 contains selected indicators from the 2014 revision of estimates and projections for the populations analysed. The figures contained in this publication are a revision of those presented in the Observatory 2013 and include updates of the estimations and projections of national populations from 1950 to 2100, taking into account new information sources available. Future issues will incorporate new estimates and projections, also prepared using the component method, but by simple ages and calendar years.
