While the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence are one of the most widely known assessment frameworks in the world, interest in the Criteria has ebbed and flowed over the years. In part this may be due to the fact that applicants are often on their own when it comes to determining how to use the Criteria and award programs in an efficient and effective manner. This difficulty is somewhat by design, since the Criteria are non-prescriptive. The requirements are presented as more than 200 questions written in a generic manner to enable their application by all types of organizations. They do not tell leaders what to do to meet the requirements, which is both good and bad. While it allows organizations to develop processes to respond to the Criteria in ways that meet their unique needs, this has created a barrier for some leaders. This book provides a detailed road map and systematic process to design and implement a customized operating model for performance excellence based on the Criteria. The road map includes regular use of state award programs for feedback to enable mid-course correction. Though recognition is not its primary purpose, following this road map also increases the likelihood of being recognized by these award programs. The approach presented here will not guarantee an award, but it will help an organization’s leaders use the Criteria and award programs more efficiently and effectively as an aid to organizational transformation and improvement. "It is true, organizations are perfectly designed to get the results they are getting. The Baldrige framework is an operating model that guides organizations to establish key processes that are proven to yield high reliability. The framework, however, can be intimidating. Kilbride’s Road Map clearly explains and provides ‘doable’ steps to apply the Baldrige Criteria and become more process-honoring. It is a compilation of the valuable education, guidance, and support Joe provided us on our journey." David Fox, President and Pattie Skriba, VP Business Excellence Advocate Good Samaritan Hospitalbr2010 Baldrige Award Recipient "The Baldrige journey of continuous improvement never ends. For such a journey you need a knowledgeable co-pilot, and Joe Kilbride has helped many organizations, examiners, judges and others pursuing excellence to navigate that journey. His expertise is priceless and the Road Map makes him your virtual co-pilot. I hope you will take the first step today; excellence awaits." Bob Barnett Retired CEO, Motorola CGISSbr2002 Baldrige Award Recipient "Surviving the challenges of today's global competition requires having a long-term plan..... and a road map to get there. This book presents an innovative and radically logical way of thinking about organizational knowledge and competition that centers on discipline, integration and focus. By tapping into the previously unrealized strengths that lie in all companies, the author suggests that it is possible for companies to move beyond informational chaos to create focused and enticing new opportunities. The 12 step method presented in the first five chapters show you how to take information from feedback from assessments, surveys and audits, convert it into usable knowledge and get bottom line improvements. The strategy expands the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) model into a Plan-Do-Knowledge-Act (PDKA) process. The case studies provided reinforce the principles and the theory behind them. Significant challenges face any organization intent on becoming world-class by managing knowledge effectively. They can be classified into four types: making use of your information by integrating it, organizing the different forms of information into a manageable framework, focusing equal attention on your strengths and your weaknesses, developing decision-making criteria based on key company drivers. The12 steps outlined in Knowledge-Driven Profit Improvement: Implementing Assessment Feedback Using PDKAction Theory will show you how to make your company into a world-class organization. Features Assists companies in becoming more competitive Serves as a guide for companies to use when taking their feedback from assessments, surveys, and audits, then integrating the feedback, and prioritizing it so that financial and operational improvements can be made Allows companies to use the information they have been accruing for years Helps companies establish better business priorities for the purpose of better planning Demonstrates the significance of improvements made by using the information gained from assessments.

The first comprehensive analysis of work and the workforce in the United States, from the Industrial Revolution to the era of globalization. This comprehensive two-volume reference book is the first to analyze the central role of work and the workforce in U.S. life from the Industrial Revolution through today's information economy. Drawing on a variety of disciplines—economics, public policy, law, human and civil rights, cultural studies, and organizational psychology—its 256 entries examine key events, concepts, institutions, and individuals in labor history. Entries also tackle tough contemporary questions that reflect the conflicts inherent in capitalism. What is the impact of work on families and communities? On minority and immigrant populations? How shall we respond to changing work roles and the growing influence of the transnational corporation? Work in America describes and evaluates attempts to address social and class issues—affirmative action, occupational health and safety, corporate management science, and trade unionism and organized labor—and offers the kind of comprehensive understanding needed to discover workable solutions.
