Près de soixante ans après sa disparition, l'œuvre de Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886-1945) nous permet de redécouvrir un architecte moderne, un théoricien sans dogme, à des lieues de l'image commune du dandy parisien qu'on lui attribue. Durant sa courte carrière - une vingtaine d'années et autant d'édifices bâtis entre les deux guerres - Mallet-Stevens s'est opposé à l'académisme des Beaux-arts tout en gardant, par ailleurs, ses distances avec la " machine à habiter " chère à Le Corbusier. Sa filiation obligée avec le " style international " résume arbitrairement un parcours personnel atypique, homogène et libre. Choyé par une clientèle aisée et progressiste, écarté des commandes publiques, ignoré des industriels, Robert Mallet-Stevens a doté la France de quelques chefs-d'œuvre de l'architecture privée qui ont rejoint sans peine l'histoire de l'architecture moderne, sans pour autant bénéficier de la protection inhérente à cette reconnaissance tardive. Dès sa première commande importante, la villa Noailles à Hyères, en 1923, l'artiste élabore un vocabulaire esthétique cohérent : complexité des volumes, nudité des surfaces et larges ouvertures se combinent en un savant jeu de cubes où règnent l'air et la lumière. Ses réalisations suivantes, la villa Poiret à Mézy-sur-Seine (1924), le garage Alfa-Roméo de la rue Marbeuf (1925), l'hôtel Barillet (1932), la villa Cavrois à Lille (1932) illustrent avec éloquence le but de ses recherches. Par ailleurs, il signe à Paris, en 1927, un ensemble unique de cinq maisons constituant la rue qui porte son nom. Ce manifeste cubiste, dont l'élégance a été gommée par des transformations drastiques, est aujourd'hui considéré comme une œuvre majeure de l'architecture du XXe siècle. Treize passionnés, venus de tous horizons - architectes, designers, journalistes ou historiens - se sont réunis pour croiser leurs points de vue et témoigner sur celui qu'ils considèrent comme un moderne à " visage humain ".

Jacques-mile Ruhlmann, Pierre Chareau, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Eileen Gray: together these designers and their contemporaries pioneered the look of the modern French interior during the 1920s. Their use of sumptuous materials, rich jewel tones, intricate geometric patterns, and complex and varied textures has made this work a lasting favorite among interior designers, architects, and their clients. When it first appeared, the got moderne, or modern taste, was marketed through limited-edition portfolios containing unbound drawings, printed in full color using a traditional process called pochoir. Created in an era before color photography, the vivid gouache and watercolor depictions of interior spaces—complete with coordinated furniture, carpets, fabrics, and decorative accessories—announced the dawn of a new era of French design and set the standards of luxury and taste that still guide us today. Moderne presents the finest examples of this work in more than two hundred plates, selected by Sarah Schleuning, a curator of the Wolfsonian Museum, and faithfully reproduced to preserve their original color palettes. This sumptuous volume is comprehensive in scope, beginning with the early art moderne of Ruhlmann and concluding with the avant-garde work of Gray and Perriand. These and other high-water marks of the period are discussed in an essay by historian Jeremy Aynsley. Designers' biographies and a brief bibliography are also included, making this an inspirational resource for interior designers and architects, and an indispensable reference for historians of the modern era.
