Melonville. Smokey Hollow. Bannock Town. Fort Tuyau. Little Chicago. Mud Flats. Pumpville. Tintown. La Coule. These were some of the names given to Métis communities at the edges of urban areas in Manitoba. Rooster Town, which was on the outskirts of southwest Winnipeg endured from 1901 to 1961. Those years in Winnipeg were characterized by the twin pressures of depression, and inflation, chronic housing shortages, and a spotty social support network. At the city’s edge, Rooster Town grew without city services as rural Métis arrived to participate in the urban economy and build their own houses while keeping Métis culture and community as a central part of their lives. In other growing settler cities, the Indigenous experience was largely characterized by removal and confinement. But the continuing presence of Métis living and working in the city, and the establishment of Rooster Town itself, made the Winnipeg experience unique. Rooster Town documents the story of a community rooted in kinship, culture, and historical circumstance, whose residents existed unofficially in the cracks of municipal bureaucracy, while navigating the legacy of settler colonialism and the demands of modernity and urbanization.

A rooster heralds the beginning and end of the day in this imaginative and beautifully illustrated bilingual poem. The song of the rooster draws forth the universe and gives way to the dance of beings and objects as day draws its first brilliant breath. This book is so supremely simple that a baby can delight in it, and yet so complex that an adult reader can find joy in the poem and beautiful images over and over again. Jorge Lujan dreamed this myth and, when he wrote it, understood that the rooster is the poet of the day. Manuel Monroy dipped his pen in the ink of the night and, when he withdrew it, found it was spangled with stars. Re-experience historical fact as it is woven into the fictional fabric of the Hawkins family with Xander Hawkins, an extremely wealthy man from Tennessee, who engages a New York lawyer to create a Trust Fund to provide for the continuation of his dream: the encouragement, education, and care of orphans. A. Alan Isaacs invites readers to sit in Xander’s study alongside the lawyer as he listens to stories about how the Hawkins family discovered a love for orphans and an unimaginable treasure! Over several days, the lawyer learns how more than 200 years of ‘Journaling’ from Xander’s ancestors continues to influence his approach to life. Along the way, readers can snap pictures of QR Codes embedded throughout Rooster’s Gold to effortlessly connect the written word to an internet-based resource. Readers can also fact-check Xander’s stories as his relatives encounter several of history’s heroes, such as Davy Crockett, Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, and many more! After returning from the Spanish-American war, Rooster’s son learns that orphaned and abandoned children are being put on trains in New York City and ‘whistle-stopped’ across the United States to live and work on farms to produce crops for the country’s exploding population. Witness how the stories of these Orphan Train Children profoundly impact the Hawkins’ family—and the New York lawyer.

One fine morning, a rooster decided he wanted to travel. In this mini-book edition, using strikingly designed, colorful collage illustrations and a beguiling simple text, Eric Carle takes his young readers on a trip with the rooster and his companions. As he travels, the rooster is joined by two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish, offering the child a graphic introduction to the meaning of numbers, number sets, and addition within the context of an entertaining story. When night falls, the rooster’s friends find he has made no provisions for their food or shelter and, disappointed, they abandon the expedition—once again in sets of five, four, three, and two, but this time in a declining series. Finally the rooster, too, decides that he has seen enough of the world and that he is, in fact, a little bit homesick. Eric Carle believes in letting children make learning discoveries at their own pace. This book can be read and enjoyed for its story and its beautiful illustrations alone; however, the child who is ready to begin to think mathematically will find additional pleasures in the opportunities presented in the text, the pictures and the diagrams for learning basic arithmetic concepts.
