Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden participated in the first round of the International Survey of Adults’ Skills. The survey is a product of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The survey assessed the proficiency in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving in technology-rich environments of adults aged 16–65. This publication is the product of the Nordic PIAAC Network, consisting of members from all five countries. It concentrates on the comparative results from four Nordic countries and Estonia, forming a Nordic region with many common features. It supplements the series of national and international PIAAC reports by comparing the results from five countries, as well as comparing an aggregate of these countries to other country aggregates. The results published in this book draw on a unique Nordic database, which the Nordic PIAAC Network has produced. The database consists of PIAAC assessment data and background information, supplemented by social, educational, and labour market register data from the five countries.

The main focus of the 13 articles in this Nordic yearbook of adult education research is on individual and corporate learning, multi-cultural education and the concept of bildung. It addresses learning and thus will not present a complete picture of the research carried out in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Nonetheless, learning, education and training cover much of what researchers and practitioners are concerned with.

This volume contains a series of papers written for a symposium entitled "Adult Education and Allocation Policy in Sweden." Intended to provide a broader framework for analyzing allocation policy in adult education, the first paper is organized around the assumption that the effects of allocation policy both on participants and society are greatly determined by institutional roles defining who gets recruited to what kind of adult education and to what extent different programs and self-directed learning contribute to the creation of resources. Discussed next is the allocation policy in various Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden). The next paper, which examines recruitment in the context of allocation policy, focuses on the ways in which changes in the occupational structure over time can illustrate long-term effects of education. Also presented is a study of dropouts in municipal adult schools in the context of allocation policy. Finally, an analysis is made of the municipal adult education teaching process in the context of allocation policy. (MN)

This yearbook contains papers that provide the reader with a general idea of the aspects and issues that interest Nordic researchers today and how they approach these problems. To provide a more uniform picture of the status of adult education in the different Nordic countries, four brief general surveys begin the book: "Adult Education Research in Denmark" (Bjarne Wahlgren); "Adult Education Research in Finland" (Jukka Tuomisto); "Adult Education Research in Norway" (Anna Gullichsen); and "Adult Education Research in Sweden" (Maj Klasson). Five articles relate to Norway: "Governing of Knowledge: Case of Work-Related Adult Education and Training" (Jens Bjornavold); "What Role Do Age and Context Play in Self-Regulated Learning" (Tove Dahl); "Survey of Participation in the Municipal and County Municipal Adult Education in Norway during School Year 1990-91" (Bjorn Madsen); "Contribution of Voluntary Organization to Norwegian Adult Education" (Leif Moland); and "Development of Mother Tongue Teachers' Further Education" (Perly Norberg).
