Sediment and Dredged Material Treatment forms the second volume in the SEDNET mini-series, Sustainable Management of Sediment Resources. The volume asks "How can you achieve sustainable sediment treatment?". In fact, before this question can be answered, many steps have to be considered beforehand. This book tackles the questions and issues which arise when looking at the various steps involved. This volume is applicable to a wide audience, from students at the graduate level, to experienced researchers and laboratory personnel in academia, industry and government. This volume also available as part of a 4-volume set, ISBN 0444519599. Discount price for set purchase. Gives a broad overview on sediment treatment with a European perspective Suitable for those new to sediment treatment as well as specialists in the field Provides an overview on the costs involved in sediment treatment

A laboratory study was made of the amenability of contaminated dredged material to various treatment procedures; the test results support the observation that many conventional wastewater treatment techniques are inapplicable and/or impractical prior to open-water disposal. Three alternative systems have demonstrated potential for the treatment of dredged material. In-line aeration provides a means of satisfying the immediate oxygen demand, thus reducing or eliminating the adverse effect of depletion of dissolved oxygen in the receiving water body. Treatment by confinement of dredged material in diked areas takes advantage of natural sedimentation processes to separate solid and liquid fractions. A system of vacuum filtration, though experimental, offers the advantages of a more rapid means of fraction separation and a smaller containment area than the confined area used for natural sedimentation treatment. An evaluation of 18 physical and chemical parameters commonly used as indices of the pollution potential of dredged material shows that bulk analysis methods do not provide an adequate assessment of the environmental effects of dredged material disposal.

Valorization of Dredged Sediments as Sustainable Construction Resources provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research on the reuse of sediments as a raw material for civil engineering fields. Dredging is increasing in scale worldwide, while deep sea disposal is being eliminated and landfill disposal is becoming less sustainable. Yet these sediments offer a potentially useful resource for constructing pavements, soil, bricks, ceramic and clinker, for they provide fine and lightweight aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials and geopolymer binders. This has sparked considerable research on valorization, which is presented here. Covers the main re-uses of sediments and the valorization required Focuses on state-of-the-art research on practical guidance Discusses limitations and future perspectives for sediments valorization The book suits researchers and students working in the area, as well as industrial engineers and professionals working on recycling and dredging.
