Sertoli Cell Metabolism And Spermatogenesis

This book is focused on Sertoli cell physiology and its role in the spermatogenic event. These cells, known as “nurse cells”, are essential for the normal development of germ cells by offering not only physical support and creating an immune-privileged environment, but also for providing nutritional support. The presence of Sertoli cells promotes the establishment of the appropriate microenvironment so that spermatogenesis may occur. Spermatogenesis maintenance in vivo is highly dependent on the metabolic cooperation established between Sertoli cells and developing germ cells. For many years this metabolic cooperation between testicular cells has been disregarded, but recent advances have highlighted the relevance of these processes for male fertility. Thus, the understanding of the functioning and regulation of these metabolic processes is a crucial step to identify key mechanisms associated with Sertoli cell (dys)function and to enlighten their influence on male fertility.

The conference represented by this book was made possible by support from NICHD and a planning committee headed by Dr. Richard Sherins. Two general areas of research are included: the first encompasses steroid hormone synthesis, metabolism and transport in the testis; and the second relates to hormonal regula tion of the seminiferous tubule with special emphasis on the con trol of Sertoli cell function. In addition, there are sections on the purification of unique testicular proteins and morpho logical studies with particular emphasis on the Sertoli cell. The spermatogenesis and spermatozoa of mammals are of funda­ mental interest to a wide variety of academic and scientific disci­ plines; zoologists keep up interest in comparative biology of sper­ matogenesis and spermatozoa in different groups of mammals for determining their phylogenetic interrelationships. Therefore, during the past 15 years, a wealth of reviews and papers have been published on the morphology (including ultrastructure), histochemistry, auto­ radiography, biochemistry (including immunology), and cell physiol­ ogy of the seminiferous epithelium including Sertoli cells, spermato­ genesis and spermatozoa in mammals. Hormonal regulation of sper­ matogenesis also forms the subject to numerous studies. Research in this area of reproductive biology continues at a remarkable rate, and new and significant information appears daily in a wide range of journals, published symposia, and specialist reviews. The scattered nature of this information makes it difficult for a scientist, student or andrologist to go through even a small fraction of these publications on the biology of spermatogenesis and spermatozoa and so obtain a general oversight of current activity and new advances. Actually, very little attempt has been made previously to summarize and inte­ grate the vast information which has become available as a result of use of modern techniques of microscopy, surface topography, histo­ chemistry, autoradiography, biochemistry, biophysics, immunology, molecular biology, in vitro systems, etc. Much-needed interdisciplin­ ary approach in biology of seminiferous epithelium, spermatogenesis and spermatozoa is very difficult and thus lacking.
