Seven Keys To Building A Robust Research Program

Identifies attributes necessary to build and maintain a robust research program.

This Report to Stakeholders reviews some of our transportation research efforts in Wisconsin during the past four years. A few of these studies are already complete and have made a significant impact on the way we do business. Many of the projects will be finished in the coming months. For all of us interested in Wisconsin's transportation future, the report provides an overview of these diverse and laudable investigations.

TRB Special Report 266: Naval Engineering: Alternative Approaches for Organizing Cooperative Research evaluates alternative approaches for organizing and managing cooperative research programs in naval engineering. At the request of the Office of Naval Research (ONR), TRB/the Marine Board convened a committee to investigate and evaluate alternative approaches for structuring cooperative research programs in naval engineering. ONR is concerned about having both research products in "total ship design" and designers who are capable of designing complex warships according to this approach. In a fast-track study, the committee evaluated four approaches to structuring a cooperative research program and provided its assessment of these options. Each model was assessed in terms of its ability to balance the perspective of the various stakeholders (Navy, shipbuilding industry, and universities) in the development of a research agenda, the production of useful research, and the ability to attract students into the field.Special Report 266 Summary

TRB Special Report 268 - Surface Transportation Environmental Research: A Long-Term Strategy defines a broad and ambitious research program to address and inform major public policy debates about the effects of surface transportation facilities and operations on the human and natural environments. The committee that conducted the study identified major gaps in knowledge that could be filled through a cooperative program of research involving federal agencies, states, and environmental organizations. The committee recommended creation of a new cooperative research program to carry out its recommended research agenda. Special Report 268 Summary

This overview summarizes the guidebook published as NCHRP Report 610. The guidebook and overview were created, and the research behind the guidebook was conducted, under NCHRP Project 20-78 by NuStats LLC in association with Texas Transportation Institute, Northwestern University, and Public Information Associates.
