Robotics is one of the hottest topics in medicine today, with an international interest that is exponentially growing. The introduction of robotic technology into modern operating theatres has provoked a revolutionary change in the basic surgical approach, with many advantages over traditional open surgical treatment, including faster recovery and a significantly lower risk of surgical trauma. While the benefits of minimally invasive surgery are apparent, the expansion of laparoscopic surgery throughout the field has been relatively slow due to the steep learning curve and the level of practice and specialism required to perform such procedures. Although revolutionary upon conception, standard laparoscopy involves the surgeon working from monitors with no depth perception and also with a surgical motion that is counter-intuitive. The introduction of robotic technology however, has surpassed the traditional laparoscopic approach by providing full three dimensional vision, intuitive motion and wristed instrumentation with motion scaling. These dramatic innovations have broadened the scope of surgeons that can now perform complex laparoscopy, and while still in its infancy, robotic assisted surgery has begun to infiltrate all fields of surgery. However, while the practical adoption of the techniques and procedures has increased over the last 5 years, the educational resources have not, leaving the only available learning tools as videos, case observation and proctorships. There is therefore a severe market void for such a publication as this, with steadily growing sales around the world of robotic surgical systems. A compact book, overseen by such a respected figure and featuring contributions from the field leaders, is sure to be very successful within the next few years.

This book focuses on a novel series of minimally invasive surgeries performed without gas insufflation and through a single port using the RoboSurgeon system. The concept of RoboSurgeon surgery involves a degree of “robotization” of the operator and participants. The operator, wearing a head-mounted display, uses robot-like handheld instruments. The endoscope is controlled by the movement of the operator’s head using a gyro-sensor system. All participants wearing head-mounted displays can see the same images as the operator does. Although this surgery is mainly intended for urological cancers, it may also be applicable for various operations concerning other urological diseases, as well as for the treatment of diseases in different medical fields. The system has the potential to become the new standard in robotic surgery. This solution may be a boon to many patients around the world, especially in the aging societies many countries are now facing.

This book provides a data-driven analysis of robotic assisted, laparoscopic, and endoscopic urological procedures in children, including renal surgery, ureteral surgery, oncology, and bladder surgery. Introductory chapters outline and describe the logistics of establishing a dedicated minimally invasive program at your institution, as well as the basics of anatomy, instrumentation, access, and trocar placement. Subsequent chapters are organized by anatomic compartment (upper tract and lower tract) and organ system. Each chapter also addresses advanced techniques and future directions, as well as common complications and case-based challenges. The final chapters review oncology and special considerations in infants. Minimally Invasive and Robotic-Assisted Surgery in Pediatric Urology provides a comprehensive, evidence-based text on pediatric urology robotic and minimally invasive surgery, allowing readers to implement the material presented for the improvement of their own practices and patient outcomes.

This text examines precisely all possible scenarios about robotic urologic surgery where a complication may arise, in order that the surgeon knows all the risk factors that predispose a complication, and if it is presented, to have all anatomical, surgical and updated scientific elements to resolve the situation successfully. The book's content is designed for easy and thorough reading. It is organized in sections that include an overview of robotic surgery, principles of anesthesia and complications, as well as recognition of failure in the instruments used in this kind of surgery. It then offers a detailed discussion of each robotic urologic surgical procedures, both the upper urinary tract, lower urinary tract, oncological procedures, reconstructive and those that are managed in conjunction with other specialties such as gynecology, pediatrics, and other highly specialized as the case of kidney transplantation. Chapters are written by experts in the field who indicate step by step review of each clinical case in particular to prevent the occurrence of associated complications, including providing information on legal aspects. The book is written for both novice surgeons and all those experts who interact daily in the wonderful world of robotic surgery. Containing the points of view and recommendations of the most experienced surgeons in each of the procedures, it is as if the professor were in the operating room with the surgeon to explain how to prevent, identify and treat complications. Complications in Robotic Urologic Surgery represents the complete collection of all the stages of complications in urologic robotic surgery and will be indispensable for all robotic surgeons.
