Six Hundred Days

The Hundred Days is an adventure novel by Talbot Mundy. Mundy was an English writer of adventure fiction who had much of his works published in pulp magazines. Excerpt: "It was night; that much was obvious. But I could not guess how many nights I might have lain unconscious, and it felt like aeons since that blow from behind had knocked me sprawling. There seemed to be two people in the room, or hut, or whatever it was, and one of them was crooning to herself in a language that if I ever understood I could not then remember. It was decidedly cold, and at last I shivered, whereat I felt agreeably soft fingers feeling the back of my hand."

The Allied forces on the Western Front had taken a beating under the weight and new tactics of the German army masterminded by General Ludendorff in 1918. However in August the Allies were ready to fight back, and they did so with a vengeance; spearheaded by the Canadian and Australian corps and 500 tanks the allied forces hammered through the German lines. Ludendorff dubbed it as “the Black Day of the German Army”. This was the start of the Battle of Amiens and would be the prelude to advances undreamed of by the Allies in earlier years of the war. The Canadian Corps had long established a reputation as a crack formation within the Allied armies and set to their task of rolling up the German lines with a passion. For the next hundred days the allied forces would surge forward and finally force the German forces to final capitulation. Illustrated with 30 maps, portraits and diagrams of the Waterloo Campaign Philip Guedalla was a British barrister, nut he was better known as a popular historical and biographical writer. His subjects were many and varied, but he had a noted inclination toward European subjects and particularly the history of France. For this volume he chose as his subject the “Hundred Days” — the return of the Emperor Napoleon from exile on Elba to his defeat at Waterloo and his final banishment to St. Helena. Eschewing national bias, the author sums up the dramatic events with wit, panache in his inimitable style.
