The ongoing processes of globalization and regionalization have drawn attention away from the traditional domains of nation-states and their interaction. However, the border-crossing activities of non-state agencies, organizations and institutions should not be overlooked, as they can shed new light on our common understanding of the contemporary world. Using the concept of transnational social spaces, contributors to this volume demonstrate the importance of transnational spaces. A collaborative project by experts across the social science disciplines, Transnational Social Spaces focuses in particular on the German-Turkish context.

A growing number of people immigrants, refugees, asylum-seekers, displaced individuals, and families lead lives that transcend national boundaries. Often because of economic pressures, these individuals continually move through places, countries, and cultures, becoming exposed to unique risk and protective factors. Though migration itself has existed for centuries, the availability of fast and cheap transportation as well as today's sophisticated technologies and electronic communications have allowed transmigrants to develop transnational identities and relationships, as well as engage in transnational activities. Yet despite this new reality, social work has yet to establish the parameters of a transnational social work practice. In one of the first volumes to address social work practice with this emergent and often marginalized population, practitioners and scholars specializing in transnational issues develop a framework for transnational social work practice. They begin with the historical and environmental context of transnational practice and explore the psychosocial, economic, environmental, and political factors that affect at-risk and vulnerable transnational groups. They then detail practical strategies, supplemented with case examples, for working with transnational populations utilizing this population's existing strengths. They conclude with recommendations for incorporating transnational social work into the curriculum.

This two-volume set LNCS 12774 and 12775 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Social Computing and Social Media, SCSM 2021, held as part of the 23rd International Conference, HCI International 2021, which took place in July 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The total of 1276 papers and 241 posters included in the 39 HCII 2021 proceedings volumes was carefully reviewed and selected from 5222 submissions. The papers of SCSM 2021, Part I, are organized in topical sections named: Computer Mediated Communication; Social Network Analysis; Experience Design in Social Computing.

Wie sieht Berlin aus der Perspektive der Asylsuchenden aus? Was macht Istanbuls Stadtteil Laleli zum Umschlagplatz des russischen Kofferhandels? Wie beeinflussen amerikanische Call-Center den Alltag in Kolkata? Befindet man sich auf dem Flughafen Frankfurt/Main noch auf deutschem Staatsgebiet? In einer Ära ökonomischer Globalisierung, multimedialer Kommunikation und grenzüberschreitender Migration bestehen Städte zunehmend aus transnationalen Räumen, deren kulturelle, ökonomische und soziale Dynamik oft stärker von weit entfernten Orten beeinflusst wird als von ihrer unmittelbaren Umgebung. Welche Eigenschaften haben diese städtischen Orte, an denen sich die Lebenswirklichkeiten verschiedener sozialer und geografischer Räume vermischen? Das Bauhaus Kolleg VI 2004/2005 untersuchte am Beispiel von Berlin, Istanbul, Kolkata und Frankfurt, wie transnationale Beziehungen die Wahrnehmung und das Gesicht der Städte verändern. Dabei wurden Spannungen und Konflikte in der "transnational city" identifiziert und beispielhafte Strategien entwickelt, um dieser rasanten Entwicklung eine Gestalt zu geben. (VLB).

The landscape of European migration has changed considerably over the past decades, in particular after the fall of the iron curtain and again after the EU enlargement to the east. The author researches the phenomenon of highly qualified migration using the example of migration between the Czech Republic and Germany. The book reveals diverse strategies migrants use to respond to the possible de-valuation of their qualification, e.g. by making use of their language skills, starting new studies or using transnational knowledge.

How have Australia, France and Germany engaged with immigration and ethnic diversity? Are there national stereotypes that have blocked effective policy-making and exacerbated conflicts? This book looks at the role of the social sciences in national discourses of migration and how scholars can explain how migration is shaping global society.
